A hybrid time-spatial multiplexing technique is provided for beamforming broadcast messages to mobile stations that may be within a coverage region or cell of a base station. The coverage region is divided into a plurality of segments. The mobile stations are assigned to at least one of the segments based on their locations within the coverage region or other criteria. The base station computes beamforming antenna weights which are configured to produce a radiation beam pattern from a plurality of antennas of the base station to respective ones of each of the plurality of segments in the region. A broadcast message is transmitted to each segment of the region in a time-division multiplexed manner using the beamforming antenna weights associated with the radiation beam pattern for the corresponding segment.

The present invention discloses a method for estimating a channel response of data subcarriers in a wireless communications network. The method comprises estimating a first plurality of channel responses of pilot subcarriers carrying pilot signals at the time instance using pilot signals, generating a pseudo time instance for pilot subcarriers according to a predetermined rule, approximating a second plurality of channel responses at the pseudo time instance using the first plurality of channel responses, computing a rate of change in the channel response using the first and second plurality of channel responses, calculating a third plurality of channel responses of pilot subcarriers carrying data at the time instance using the first plurality of channel responses and the rate of change in the channel response, estimating the channel response of the data subcarriers from the first and third plurality of channel responses using a predetermined conventional two-dimensional channel estimation algorithm.

The present invention discloses a method for allocating an uplink sounding region dynamically to obtain downlink channel quality information (CQI) about a downlink channel. The method comprises receiving a downlink transmission request and retrieving an identification information from the downlink transmission request, searching one or more databases using the retrieved identification information as a key, identifying the CQI about the downlink channel from the one or more databases, wherein the uplink sounding region needs not to be allocated when the CQI corresponding to the downlink transmission request is identified in the databases.

A method and apparatus are provided for scheduling a transmission of uplink sounding signals for a mobile station (MS). The method comprises receiving a request to send the MS downlink signals associated with a service flow at a first frame, searching a scheduling database for pending uplink bandwidth requests from the MS, scheduling uplink transmission slots for the MS to transmit uplink signals in a second frame without scheduling a sounding signal when a uplink bandwidth request associated with the MS is present in the scheduling database, computing beamforming weighting vectors for the MS using the uplink signals, and transmitting the downlink signals using the beamforming weighting vectors at a third frame subsequent the first frame.

A system and method are provided for detecting locations of a customer premises equipment in a wireless communication system with one or more base transceiver stations and one is efficient. A plurality of antennas in a base transceiver station (BTS) receives signals transmitted from a customer premises equipment (CPE). A timing detection module extracts the timing offset from the receiving signals and a first calculation module calculates the distance between the BTS and the CPE based on the timing offset. A signal detection module detects magnitudes and phases of the receiving signals and a second calculation module determines a dominant beam according to the antenna pattern and calculates the direction of arrival of the dominant beam. A third calculation module calculates the location of the CPE relative to the BTS based on the distance and the direction of arrival.

The present invention discloses a method for wireless communications network performance in transmitting a message.
