Sensors for imaging boreholes via the detection of electrical and optical properties may be subject to harsh conditions downhole, such as from pressure and temperature. In addition, these sensors may be subject to impact, such as tension, elongation, and compression forces, along the wall of the borehole. The harsh conditions downhole and impacts on the sensor can lead to premature wear and even breaking. The present disclosure generally relates to an apparatus for measuring electrical and optical properties of the borehole and methods for manufacturing the apparatus.

In some examples, the electrical conductors can include an inner electrically conductive element, which can define a central longitudinal axis. A first polymer layer can be disposed circumferentially about the inner electrically conductive element. A plurality of electrical conductor segments can be disposed about the first polymer layer and spaced around the central longitudinal axis. A second polymer layer can be disposed between the electrical conductor segments. The second polymer layer and the electrical conductor segments together can define a substantially annular cross-sectional area and an outer perimeter surface. An electrical insulator can be disposed about the outer perimeter surface defined by the second polymer layer and the electrical conductor segments.

A downhole cable that has a cable core with an inner jacket located about it. The inner jacket has a shell located thereabout, and a pair of strength member layers surrounds the inner shell. Interstitial spaces of the strength member layers are filled with bonding layers. One of the strength member layers is at a contra-helical lay angle to the other. An outer jacket is located about one of the strength member layers, and the outer jacket is bonded with the bonding layers.

Method of making a cable

A cable that include a hose having a conductor located thereabout. A first strength member layer is located about the conductor. A second strength member layer is located about the first strength member layer. A first jacket is located about the second strength member layer. The first jacket is fiber-reinforced. A second jacket is located about the first jacket. The second jacket is a contrasting color to the first jacket.
