Techniques discussed herein can facilitate the use of reference signals in active TCI switching. One example aspect is a user equipment (UE), comprising: a memory interface; and processing circuitry communicatively coupled to the memory interface and configured to: receive a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) message that includes an activation command indicating a target transmission configuration indicator (TCI) state; decode the activation command within a decoding period, where the decoding period is a time period allocated for the UE to decode the activation command; receive a TCI resource where the TCI resource is a reference signal; perform time and frequency tracking associated with the target TCI state according the TCI resource; and switch to the target TCI state after performing time and frequency tracking.

This disclosure relates to techniques for aligning wireless device and cellular network expectations and behavior in conjunction with neighbor cell measurements in a wireless communication system. A wireless device may determine that a reference signal is configured for a neighbor cell measurement when communication with the serving cell is also configured. The wireless device may determine whether the reference signal for the neighbor cell measurement is configured with same or different subcarrier spacing as the communication with the serving cell. The wireless device may select one or more of the reference signal for the neighbor cell measurement or the communication with the serving cell to receive based at least in part on whether the reference signal for the neighbor cell measurement is configured with same or different subcarrier spacing as the communication with the serving cell.

Techniques discussed herein can facilitate transmission and reference signals (RS) associated with layer-1 (L1) operations outside of a configured carrier bandwidth (CBW) of a user equipment (UE). One example aspect is a UE with one or more processors configured to transmit UE capability information. The UE capability information includes a frequency separation threshold, where the frequency separation threshold represents a frequency separation from a CBW of the UE. The one or more processors are further configured to receive a RS within the frequency separation threshold and outside of the CBW, and subsequently perform a L1 operation based on the RS.

For example, a UE is configured to receive a handover command to connect to a target cell. The UE is further configured to determine a search time and an interruption time uncertainty during a handover procedure initiated by the handover command and in response to a LBT failure or the UE performing a beam sweeping operation. The UE can further determine a handover delay based on the search time and the interruption time uncertainty. In response to a time period for performing the handover procedure exceeding the handover delay, the UE can cease the handover procedure.

Methods, apparatuses, and systems are disclosed for compensating for cell identification delays that are beyond the control of the UE, in connection with standards-specified cell identification timing limits. In frequency bands including both beam sweeping and listen-before-talk (LBT) requirements, a cell identification procedure may be significantly delayed due to LBT failure at the base station and/or beam misalignment between the base station and the UE. Therefore, UE cell identification timing constraints may be dynamically adjusted to compensate for such delays. For example, the time window allowed for cell identification of a neighbor cell may be dynamically increased in response to determining that one or more SSBs were not available at the UE during an SMTC occasion. In some scenarios, if the timing increase exceeds a predetermined threshold, the UE may restart the cell identification procedure, e.g., on the same frequency layer or on a different frequency layer.
