A medical pad for exchanging thermal energy between a targeted temperature management (TTM) fluid and a patient is disclosed. The pad can include a fluid containing layer and a fluid conduit attached therewith via rotatable joint where the joint is configured to facilitate rotation of the fluid conduit with respect to the pad. A method of manufacturing the pad can include coupling a first member of the rotatable joint to a fluid delivery line, coupling the second member to the fluid containing layer, and inserting the first member within an opening of the second member to facilitate a snap-fit retention mechanism between first member and the second member. A method of using the pad can include rotating the fluid delivery line relative to the thermal pad via the rotatable joint when initially applying the pad to the patient or when adjusting an orientation of the pad on the patient.

Examples relate to fluid collection devices, and related systems and methods. In some embodiments, a fluid collection device includes a fluid impermeable barrier and a fluid permeable body. The fluid impermeable barrier may include a first end region, a second end region, a front side, and a back side. The fluid impermeable barrier defines an opening on the front side, one or more apertures on the back side distal to the opening and positioned between the first end region and the second end region, and a chamber within the fluid collection device. At least one of the first end region or the second end region may be substantially planar. The fluid permeable body is positioned within the chamber and extends across at least a portion of the opening.

Fluid collection devices having a collection bag, and related systems and methods

A biological fluid separation device adapted to receive a biological fluid sample having a first portion and a second portion is disclosed. The device includes a housing having a first chamber having a first chamber inlet for receiving the biological fluid sample therein and a first chamber outlet. The housing has a second chamber having a second chamber inlet and a second chamber outlet, and a separation member separating at least a portion of the first chamber outlet and the second chamber. The separation member is adapted to restrain the first portion of the biological fluid sample within the first chamber and to allow at least a portion of the second portion of the biological fluid sample to pass into the second chamber. An actuator, such as a vacuum source, draws the biological fluid sample into the first chamber and the second portion into the second chamber.

A filtration cell () for a biological sample including an upper chamber for receiving the biological sample to be filtered, a lower chamber in fluid communication with the upper chamber, and a filtration membrane () positioned between the upper chamber and the lower chamber is disclosed. A surface of the filtration membrane has a contact angle &#x3e;90&#xb0;. The flow of the biological sample through the upper chamber may be tangential to the filtration membrane and a filtrate passing through the filtration membrane may be collected in the lower chamber. Also, a method of filtering a biological sample including passing the biological sample through an upper chamber of a filtration cell as described above and collecting a filtrate in the lower chamber is disclosed.

A time-of-use activated syringe assembly includes a syringe barrel defining a chamber, a plunger rod having a forward attachment end located within the chamber of the barrel, and a stopper located within the chamber of the barrel and including a rearward end adapted to receive the plunger rod. The stopper includes a first perimetrical skirt extending around an outer circumference thereof and extending toward a front end of the stopper. An activation mechanism is associated with at least one of the stopper and the plunger rod, and the plunger rod is configured for transition between a pre-loaded position in which the activation mechanism is unactivated and a loaded position in which the activation mechanism is activated. Upon activation, the activation mechanism applies a radial force to the first perimetrical skirt causing the skirt to seal against an inner wall of the syringe barrel.

Time-of-use activated syringe stopper

A blood separation device adapted to receive a blood sample having a whole blood portion and a plasma portion is disclosed. The blood separation device includes a housing defining a first chamber, a second chamber, and a separation member disposed therebetween. The blood separation device also includes an actuator, wherein actuation of the actuator draws the blood sample into the first chamber and the separation member is adapted to allow the plasma portion to pass through the separation member to the second chamber. The blood separation device matches the plasma chamber volume, the blood chamber volume, and the applied single pressure source so that the correct trans-membrane pressure and shear rate is obtained.

A filtration cell () for a biological sample having an outer housing () defining a first chamber and an inner housing () defining a second chamber is disclosed. The inner housing is disposed within the first chamber and rotatable with respect to the outer housing and at least a portion of the inner housing includes a filtration membrane (). Upon rotation of the inner housing, a first portion of the biological sample passes from the first chamber into the second chamber and a second portion of the biological sample is restrained in the first chamber. Alternatively, the filtration cell may also include a rotation element disposed in the inner housing. Upon rotation of the rotation element with respect to the inner housing, a first portion of the biological sample to passes from the second chamber into the first chamber and a second portion of the biological sample is restrained in the second chamber.
