Described herein are textured glass-based articles. The textured glass based articles may include a glass-based substrate including a first major surface and a second major surface. At least a portion of one or both of the first major surface and the second major surface is textured, wherein the portion of the one or both of the first major surface and the second major surface that are textured may have a sparkle at 140 ppi of less than or equal to 5% and an uncoupled distinctness-of-image of at least 78%. Methods for making such articles are also described herein.

Textured glass-based articles

Methods of manufacturing a glass-based article include exposing a glass-based substrate to a molten salt bath including a first salt and a second salt. In aspects, the first salt includes a metal ion that has a larger ionic radii than an alkali metal of the glass-based substrate and a first anion, and the second salt dissolved in the molten salt bath includes the same metal ion as the first salt and a second anion different from the first anion. In aspects, the first salt is potassium nitrate, the second salt is potassium carbonate, and a concentration of the potassium carbonate remains at or below its solubility limit in the molten salt bath.

Enhanced ion exchange methods

A glass article is provided that includes: a glass substrate comprising a thickness and a primary surface; and a textured region defined by the primary surface. The textured region comprises a plurality of sub-surface hillocks, each hillock having a top surface and a base, the base located below the primary surface of the substrate. The plurality of hillocks comprises an average lateral feature size from 0.1 &#x3bc;m to 3 &#x3bc;m and an average height from 5 nm to 200 nm. Further, the primary surface of the substrate is substantially planar.

Textured glass articles and methods of making the same

Glass-based articles are provided with improved stress profiles. The glass-based articles provide improved drop performance and damage resistance. The glass-based articles may be produced with a single ion exchange treatment.

Glass-based articles with improved stress profiles

Methods of enhanced ion exchange (IOX) include exposing a substrate to a bath mixture that includes a second salt dissolved in a first salt, the second salt includes the same metal ion as the first salt with an anion different from the first salt. The first salts are conventional nitrate salts into which one or more second salts, for example, carbonate, sulfate, chloride, fluorine, borate, or phosphate salts are dissolved. The second salts remain at or below their solubility limits in the first salts. Any poisoning ions remain at or below their solubility limits in the bath mixture. Glass-based articles made therefrom and electronic devices incorporating the glass-based articles are also disclosed.

A method of reworking lithium containing ion exchanged glass-based articles is provided. The method includes a reverse ion exchange process that returns the glass-based article to approximately the composition of the glass from which the glass-based article was produced, before being subjected to ion exchange.

Glass-based articles comprise: a glass-based substrate having opposing first and second surfaces defining a substrate thickness (t); a stress profile comprising: a compressive stress region extending from the first surface to a depth of compression (DOC), the DOC located at 0.04&#x2022;t or deeper; and a central tension region. An alkali metal oxide is present in the central tension region. A first metal oxide whose metal has the same or smaller atomic radius as the metal of the alkali metal oxide, and a second metal oxide whose metal has a larger atomic radius than the metal of the alkali metal oxide are both present in independent concentrations that vary within at least a portion of the compressive stress region. The glass-based substrates are exposed to a multi-step ion exchange process including a first treatment of doping with ions smaller than the alkali metal oxide of the pre-fabricated glass-based substrate; and a second treatment of strengthening with larger ions to enable superior stress profile attributes. The first treatment may occur at temperatures within 300&#xb0; C. of the strain point of the glass-based substrate.

A method of controlling blister formation in a glass melt flowing through a system comprising one or more refractory metal vessels by developing a blister index and determining the critical blister index value. The critical value of the blister index may be used to control the principal variables responsible for blister formation, including the water content of the melt, the concentration of reduced multivalent oxide compounds in the melt, and the hydrogen partial pressure of an atmosphere in contact with the outside surface of the refractory metal vessel. Also disclosed is a minimum partial pressure of hydrogen necessary to produce an essentially blister-free glass article in a glass essentially free of arsenic and antimony.

Method of eliminating blisters in a glass making process

The invention is directed to method of preparing metal fluoride single crystals and particularly to crystals where the metal is calcium, barium, magnesium or strontium, or a mixture thereof. The invention uses a decreasing fast cooling profile and an increasing slow cooling profile for the hot zone and the cold zone, respectively, after crystal formation during cooling from melt temperatures to a first temperature. A substantially constant cooling rate is then applied to the both zones during cooling from the first temperature to a final temperature, usually room temperature. It has been found that the substantially constant cooling rate during the annealing process results in crystals having improved homogeneity and birefringence.

Crystal growth methods

The present invention is directed to a process or method for preparing a metal fluoride pre-melt material of a quality suitable for the preparation and growth of metal fluoride optical monocrystals. The pre-melt material of the invention is prepared using permeable graphite crucibles having a permeability (porosity) greater than 4 cm/s. Exemplary monocrystals prepared from pre-melts of the invention exhibited improved transmissivity and laser durability relative to monocrystals prepared from convention pre-melt materials. Impurities in the pre-melt arising from the use of scavenger/fluorinating agent in the pre-melt have been shown to be generally less than 10 ppb and be less than 1 ppb.
