A particle generator is able to generate pure particles for solid or liquid materials with melting points over several hundred degrees Celsius. The material is heated to generate the vapor in a small chamber. Heated nitrogen or some inert gas is used as the carry gas to bring the mixture into a dilution system. As the super saturation ratio of the material is large enough and over a critical value, particles are formed in the dilution system by homogenous nucleation, and grown in the same dilution system as well. The different size distributions and concentrations of the particles can be obtained by varying dilution parameters, such as residence time and dilution ratio.

Pure particle generator

A penetration and removal efficiency calibration unit for a volatile particle remover in a solid particle counting system provides an accurate and efficient approach to calibration. The calibration unit includes an aerosol inlet, a flow meter downstream of the aerosol inlet, and a mixer. The flow meter receives the aerosol flow from the aerosol inlet and provides an output flow to the mixer. The mixer receives the output flow from the flow meter and also has a dilution gas inlet. The mixer provides a mixer output flow for reception by the volatile particle remover or particle counter. A first flow controller controls flow into the dilution gas inlet. The calibration unit also includes a bypass inlet. A second flow controller controls flow into the bypass inlet, and a control loop controls the bypass flow such that the aerosol flow tracks a reference value.

A solid particle counting system for measuring solid particle number concentrations from engine or vehicle exhausts in real-time includes a flow splitter having an inlet, a sample outlet, and a by-pass outlet arranged such that a main flow enters the inlet and changes direction to exit the by-pass outlet. A sample flow from the main flow exits the sample outlet. The flow splitter further includes a guiding element arranged such that particles at a sampling location upstream of the main flow direction change are guided to the sample outlet.

A solid particle counting system for measuring solid particle number concentrations from engine or vehicle exhausts in real-time includes an evaporation unit, a diluter arrangement, and a particle counter. The diluter arrangement mixes the dilution gas with the gases from the evaporation unit at a dilution ratio, and the diluter arrangement includes a flow meter located upstream of the evaporation unit for measuring the flow of gases into the evaporation unit which, in turn, flow into the diluter arrangement.

A solid particle counting system for measuring solid particle number concentrations from engine or vehicle exhausts in real-time includes a diluter arrangement, a particle counter, and a flow splitter. The diluter arrangement mixes the dilution gas with flowing sample gases. The flow splitter receives the output flow from the diluter arrangement, provides a portion of this flow to the particle counter, and provides a by-pass flow that is received by a vacuum pump. A second flow route to the particle counter includes a valve arranged such that opening the valve during the starting of the vacuum pump reduces a pressure pulse at the particle counter caused by the starting of the vacuum pump, thereby avoiding work fluid backflow from the particle counter prior to the vacuum pump stabilizing.

A partial flow sampling system includes a system inlet for receiving an exhaust sample flow from a sample inlet probe and transfer line. The system further includes a dilution air control system for controlling a dilution air flow rate, and a mixer. The mixer receives and mixes the exhaust sample flow and the dilution air flow to produce a mixture flow. A total flow control system controls the mixture flow rate. An orifice flow meter installed at the system inlet measures the exhaust sample flow rate in. real-time. This provides accurate sample flow measurements over a wide range of dilution ratios and sample ratios.

Sampler for engine exhaust dilution

A particle generating system includes an aerosol generator, an ejector diluter, and an aerosol diluter. The ejector diluter receives the generated aerosol and dilutes the aerosol to an expected raw concentration. The aerosol diluter further dilutes the aerosol to a concentration in the range of 0% to 100% of the expected raw concentration. The aerosol diluter includes a mini cyclone for diluting the aerosol. The particle generating system may be configured to provide variable concentrations of monodisperse or polydisperse aerosols for instrument calibration. The system may provide constant concentrations in the range of 0% to 100% of the raw concentration. The mini cyclone makes the system compact, and the system may be portable.

Wide range constant concentration particle generating system

A wide range continuous diluter for diluting gases that contain small particles to allow subsequent measurement of the diluted gases with an instrument is provided. A dilution gas inlet receives a dilution gas, and a sample gas inlet receives a sample gas. A flow meter measures the sample gas flow rate. A mixer receives and mixes the dilution gas and the sample gas at a dilution ratio. An instrument flow outlet provides a well-defined flow into the instrument from the mixture flow. A make-up gas inlet is arranged to provide make-up gas into the mixture flow at a controlled rate. Because the dilution gas flows at a controlled rate and the mixture flows at a controlled rate, changing the flow rate of the make-up gas causes a responsive change in the sample gas flow rate, thereby allowing continuous adjustment and control of the dilution ratio when desired.
