An integrated optical device includes a substrate. A waveguide includes a lithium niobate. A TiOcoating is disposed at least in part over a longitudinal surface of the waveguide as a coated waveguide supported by the substrate. A silicon oxide substantially can cover and surround the waveguide in cross section over a longitudinal direction of said waveguide as an optical cladding. A method for substantially eliminating optical damage in lithium niobate devices is also described.

Method and device for substantially eliminating optical damage in lithium niobate devices

A self-starting mode locking soliton device includes a first optical port to accept an input coherent light. A second optical port provides an output comb of a plurality of wavelengths. A comb resonator with optical Kerr nonlinearity and anomalous group-velocity dispersion is optically coupled to both of said first optical port and said second optical port. The resonator includes an optical property of a negative nonlinear bistability to enable the self-starting mode locking of a Kerr soliton comb. A method of self-starting mode locking is described. A method of producing the negative nonlinear bistability is also described.

Technologies are generally described for operating and manufacturing optomechanical accelerometers. In some examples, an optomechanical accelerometer device is described that uses a cavity resonant displacement sensor based on a zipper photonic crystal nano-cavity to measure the displacement of an integrated test mass generated by acceleration applied to the chip. The cavity-resonant sensor may be fully integrated on-chip and exhibit an enhanced displacement resolution due to its strong optomechanical coupling. The accelerometer structure may be fabricated in a silicon nitride thin film and constitute a rectangular test mass flexibly suspended on high aspect ratio inorganic nitride nano-tethers under high tensile stress. By increasing the mechanical Q-factors through adjustment of tether width and tether length, the noise-equivalent acceleration (NEA) may be reduced, while maintaining a large operation bandwidth. The mechanical Q-factor may be improved with thinner (e.g., &#x3c;1 micron) and longer tethers (e.g., 10-560 microns).

Optomechanical accelerometer

An integrated optomechanical disk vibratory gyroscope device includes a mechanical oscillator having a substantially circular structure. The substantially circular structure is supported by a pillar, and mechanically isolated from a surrounding structure by a gap or slot. One or more actuators are coupled to the mechanical oscillator across the gap or slot. Each of the one or more actuators is configured to excite the mechanical oscillator in a driving mode. One or more optomechanical cavities are disposed substantially in a plane defined by the mechanical oscillator. At least one component of the one or more optomechanical cavities is disposed on or in the substantially circular structure. Each of the at least one or more optomechanical cavities configured to measure a displacement of the mechanical oscillator in a sensing mode. A method of manufacture is also described.

Optomechanical disk vibratory gyroscopes

The present disclosure describes an integrated opto-mechanical and electro-mechanical system. The opto-mechanical and electro-mechanical system can be made of photonic crystals configured to move based on electrical voltages and/or back action effects from electromagnetic waves, thus changing the resonance of the system.
