Disclosed herein is a fiber optic system including at least one fiber optic cable assembly having a multimode optical fiber for communication of an optical data signal at an operating wavelength and a devices having a single-mode fiber stub with a mode field diameter within 20% of the mode field diameter of the fundamental mode of the multimode optical fiber at the operating wavelength. The single-mode fiber stub is secured to a ferrule, and a center of a core of the single-mode fiber stub is within 0.5 μm of a center of the ferrule. An end of the single-mode fiber stub that extends to or beyond the back end of the ferrule and forms an optical connection with the multimode optical fiber where the center of the single-mode fiber stub is within 2 μm of a center of the multimode optical fiber.

Structured multicore fiber optic cabling systems, network components, and methods of making same. The cabling system includes a multicore fiber optic cable assembly and a plurality of network components. Each cable assembly includes first and second cable connectors and a plurality of multicore optical fibers. One half of the plurality of multicore optical fibers have a first draw direction, and the other half of the plurality of multicore optical fibers have a second draw direction opposite the first draw direction. The first and second cable connectors are configured so that their end faces define a connector core pattern having mirror-image symmetry. Each network component of the cabling system includes a port connector having a port connector interface that has the connector core pattern. Core polarity is preserved between a first network component and a second network component of the plurality of network components connected by the cable assembly.

In one embodiment, a multicore optical fiber stub includes a plurality of optical cores, each optical core having an inner core and an outer core, and a fiber coupling section having a first diameter. The plurality of optical cores has a first pitch at the fiber coupling section. Each core at the fiber coupling section has a first index profile. The multicore optical fiber stub also includes a multicore fiber coupling section having a second diameter less than the first diameter. The plurality of optical cores has a second pitch at the multicore fiber coupling section that is less than the first pitch. Each core at the multicore fiber coupling section has a second index profile. The multicore optical fiber stub further includes a taper section between the first pitch at the fiber coupling section and the second pitch at the multicore fiber coupling section. The taper section has a taper ratio of less than 4.

Multicore fiber stubs, multicore fan-in, fan-out devices, and methods of fabricating the same

The present disclosure relates to methods of assembling a lensed optical fiber array by printing in situ a lens onto each optical fiber of an optical fiber array with an ultrafast laser system where the lens can be shaped to the optical fiber end face to reduce pitch mismatch. In some embodiments, optical fiber(s) of the optical fiber array can be cleaved, and the lens can be shaped to the optical fiber end face to reduce pitch mismatch.

Laser printed lensed optical fibers and associated methods

A fiber coupling assembly for interfacing solid core and a hollow core optical fibers includes first and second fiber optic ferrules each having a bore between proximal and distal end faces thereof. At least one ferrule end face is non-perpendicular to longitudinal axes of the ferrules. A bore of one ferrule contains a hollow core optical fiber, and a bore of the other optic ferrule contains a solid core optical fiber with a mode field diameter (MFD) transition region, to bridge a MFD mismatch between the fibers. An air gap may be provided between at least portions of ferrules at an inter-ferrule region. A fiber optic ferrule includes a bore that is non-parallel with a longitudinal axis of the ferrule, and at least one end face that is non-perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, with an optical fiber in the bore optionally including a MFD transition region.

The present disclosure relates to a process by which an optical fiber array is cleaved with a laser-cleaving apparatus. The coating material is stripped or removed from a section of an optical fiber array; a coated or ribbonized section of the optical fiber array is secured in a holder; the holder is aligned inside the laser-cleaving apparatus; the laser cleaves the stripped ends of the fibers in the optical fiber array; the laser-cleaved ends of the optical fibers are then mechanically separated to remove the free ends from the optical fibers in the optical fiber array, leaving a cleaved array of optical fibers. The cleaving process enables the optical fiber array to be cleaved at flexible locations along an optical fiber ribbon or optical fiber cable with no swelling, minimal cleave angle variation across the cores of the optical fibers, a controlled surface roughness of the optical fiber end-faces, and high process yield.

Core configuration transformers and methods of making same. A core configuration transformer includes a transforming optical fiber having plurality of routing cores embedded therein. The transforming optical fiber includes a first end face and a second end face. The plurality of routing cores is configured to define a first end face core pattern at the first end face of the transforming optical fiber, and a second end face core pattern at the second end face of the transforming optical fiber that has one or both of a different arrangement of cores or a different polarity of cores.
