An apparatus and method is described herein for optimization to prefetch throttling, which potentially enhances performance, reduces power consumption, and maintains positive gain for workloads that benefit from prefetching. More specifically, the optimizations described herein allow for bandwidth congestion and prefetch accuracy to be taken into account as feedbacks for throttling at the source of prefetch generation. As a result, when there is low congestion, full prefetch generation is allowed, even if the prefetch is inaccurate, since there is available bandwidth. However, when congestion is high, the determination of throttling falls to prefetch accuracy. If accuracy is high&#x2014;miss rate is low&#x2014;then less throttling is needed, because the prefetches are being utilized&#x2014;performance is being enhanced. Yet, if prefetch accuracy is low&#x2014;miss rate is high&#x2014;then more prefetch throttling is needed to save power, because the prefetch are not being utilized&#x2014;performance is not being enhanced by the large number of prefetches.

Prefetch optimization in shared resource multi-core systems

According to an embodiment of the invention, a data controller comprises a traffic pattern collector to observe a data traffic pattern, the data traffic being comprised of data packets; a traffic service engine to receive data from the traffic controller concerning the data traffic pattern and to determine a data flow specification for the data traffic pattern, the received data including the size and arrival time of each of the data packets; and a quality of service provider to receive the data flow specification. The data flow specification is the minimum data flow specification data flow specification that will allow each of the data packets to be transferred by the traffic controller within a delay upper bound. According to one embodiment, the minimum data flow specification for the data traffic pattern is determined according to an algorithm known as the Any-Delay TB Algorithm.

A traffic pattern of data packets that originate at a traffic source and are transmitted through one of multiple ports is monitored. A method and apparatus are presented that may dynamically characterize network traffic so that a user application can reserve appropriate network resources for submitting traffic to a network. According to one embodiment, at least one value characterizing the traffic is generated and transmitted to the network. This value can be dynamically updated to ensure that an appropriate amount of network resources is reserved. Using this method and apparatus, the risk of either over-subscribing network resources or failing to reserve enough resources to provide necessary quality of service (QoS) may be eliminated.

Each rule defines conditions that when evaluated true trigger actions to allow or deny the service. Techniques are disclosed which provide for explicit, flexible, and centralized assignment of policy to targets which are specified network services. A method and system are disclosed for measuring data traffic with parameters of the token bucket (with queue) traffic shaping model. Based upon measurements of data traffic, token bucket capacity is calculated as a function of token generation. The complexity of the calculations is linearly related to the number of data packets in the traffic pattern.
