Aspects of the subject matter described herein relate to data collection. In aspects, when data is desired from one or more data sources, a size and/or other data regarding the data is obtained. Then, a data structure is generated that indicates multiple chunks of the data to obtain. Using the data structure and a query template, a query is generated to obtain a chunk of data. The obtained chunk of data is stored in a local store. If more chunks need to be obtained, first a wait for a period is performed before submitting another query for another chunk of data.

Declarative partitioning for data collection queries

Systems and methods are provided to improve map type data visualizations in which custom images are used as background against which datasets are visualized. In various examples, coordinate systems are automatically generated and applied to the custom image based on the positional data of the dataset. The custom image may replace a pre-existing background, and the plotting of the dataset may be automatically modified based on differences between the pre-existing background and the custom image. Aspects provide for enhanced user control of the map type visualization to further modify how datasets are plotted and how visualizations are presented. Example modifications include offsets and scales, which may be automatically determined and applied or set manually. In some examples, the custom image may be part of a set of image tiles, which are operable to provide various levels of detail from several viewing angles and heights.

Gaps in performance data are corrected for through data transformations and conversion. A raw sequence is transformed by correction logic into an interval sequence by partitioning a performance monitoring period into equal intervals and assigning values based on the raw sequence. Locality sequence entries can indicate whether the interval sequence relies on estimation. The interval sequence is converted into an absence length sequence whose entries indicate null value periods in performance data. Conversion includes generating a presence sequence from the interval sequence, and deriving the absence length sequence from the presence sequence, by using a set-based algorithm or other mechanism. Excessive absence length values support treating intervals as downtime for the machine. Correction logic may include a stored procedure residing in a database, for example, which produces the absence length sequence without using a procedural language.
