One or more media for performing a method of activating a set of user-input elements (e.g., touch-sensitive keys) accommodated by a mobile device according to configuration settings is provided. Initially, a message sent from a transmitting device having a data file includes an address to identify the mobile device. Upon the identified mobile device sending a request to access the data file, a communications-network server performs a configuration-preparation process that includes the following steps: retrieving the appropriate data file, determining the capabilities of mobile device based on a user-agent profile, selecting configuration settings specific to the mobile device capabilities, and dynamically appending the configuration settings to the data file, which are then transmitted to the mobile device. Upon receipt, the mobile device applies the configuration settings to activate at least a portion of the user-input elements, where activation enables activated user-input element(s) to trigger a command on the mobile device.

A method of customizing a device in accordance with the company for whom the device-user works and in accordance with the job held by the user at the company. A provisioning system receives a request to provision (e.g., activate) a device and responsively determines the company at which the device-user works and the job held by the user at the company. The provisioning system then establishes customization-data usable by the device to become customized in a manner corresponding with the company and job, and the provisioning system sends the customization-data to the device to cause the device to become customized accordingly. This process can be applied to automatically customize a device so as to adopt a base user-interface, functionality, and reference data that is all related to the company at which the device-user works and that is tailored in a manner appropriate to the user's job at the company.

Computer-readable media, systems, and methods for initializing a destination application on a mobile device based upon a received uniform resource locator ('URL') request that is associated with the destination application. In embodiments, a URL request is received from a background application on a mobile device and the URL request indicates an address of a website that the user requests the mobile device be redirected to. Further, in embodiments, the URL request is parsed to obtain an application identification portion that is at least part of the URL request. In embodiments, it is determined that there is an association between the application identification portion and the destination application where the destination application is registered on the mobile device and is associated with the application identification portion of the URL request. Still further, in embodiments, the destination application is initialized.

In embodiments, as a user progresses through the multi-page article, pages and/or lines of text of the multi-page article are cached. In response to a user request to view the multi-page article in a full-page format, the cached content is compared against text of the full-page document and used to determine a presentation of the text that displays nonduplicative content to the user.

One or more computer readable media, that enable a method for remotely activating one or more communication-forwarding functions for a mobile-communication device are provided. The present invention allows a forwarding service operated by a provider of mobile communication services and a forwarding application that runs on a mobile communication device to be remotely activated by a user that does not have possession of the mobile communication device. The mobile communication device receives an activation message with instructions to automatically activate a communication-forwarding function. In response to the activation message the mobile communication device activates the requested communication-forwarding function in conformity with the instructions in the activation message. The activation message is generated and sent by an activation-message generator.

APIs and applications operate in the mobile device to collect various data associated with the operation of the mobile device. The mobile device can be configured by a user or a service provider system to determine which data to collect. The collected data is consolidated through calculations resulting in a single value or variable that indicates the operating health of the mobile device. A visual representation of the single value or variable is provided in a display at the mobile device to illustrate the health of the mobile device to the user.

Systems, products, and methods are disclosed for helping to ensure that an alarm of a mobile communications device is activated when desired. An illustrative method includes receiving an indication of a desired time that the alarm is intended to be activated, determining a power level of a power source that is powering the mobile communications device, determining whether the power level will provide sufficient power to the mobile communications device to enable it to activate the alarm at the desired time and, if so, then enabling the alarm to be set. Further, the power source could be monitored as the alarm-activation time approaches so that if variables change that might prevent the alarm from activating, then changes or preventive measures can be taken.

Conflict-resolution logic executable by a processor may receive an alert notification for the given event, determine which alert logic elements are operable to present an alert for the given event, determine which of the alert logic elements are running and a priority for each of the alert logic elements, suppressing operation of the alert logic elements that are running and do not have the highest priority, and providing alert notification to the alert logic element that is running and having the highest priority. The alert logic element receiving the alert notification causes the alert for the given event to be presented.

Embodiments of the invention provide ways to track the status of calls made to mobile devices. A method is disclosed for dynamically varying a content download depending on whether the download is a foreground-download or a background-download. When a server receives a content-request from a device, the server determines whether the content-request is foreground-generated or background-generated and accordingly selects a set of content to transmit in response to the device. If the content-request is background-generated, for instance, the server may select a smaller quantity of content, since the device user might not be actively involved with the download. On the other hand, if the content-request is foreground-generated, the server may select a larger quantity of content, since the user is involved at the time. Alternatively, the device itself may select a location from which to request content, based on whether the download is a foreground-download or a background-download.

A contact list client application running on a client device operates to request and receive contact lists over a network from a plurality of different contact list servers, and the application stores the contacts from these lists in a merged contact list. When a user selects a contact in the merged list, the contact list client application identifies one out of a plurality of communication applications on the client device and causes the identified communication application to initiate communications with the contact. Contact lists that relate to different communications formats, such as voice communications, SMS (short message service) messages, and email can be integrated into a single client view on the client device.

A wireless telephone includes one or more keys incorporating a programmable display. The display may display an image file (e.g., a photo of a parent or friend), such as a photo captured by a camera incorporated into the telephone. The image file may be displayed directly on the key or it may be cropped or downsampled as appropriate. The user interface allows the user to program the key to dial a particular telephone number. In one embodiment, during a multi-party conference call the keys display images of the conference call participants. The participant currently speaking can be displayed on a main display of the phone. When the conference call is over, the key displays revert back to their previous display state.
