The present invention relates to a composition comprising an aqueous dispersion of submicron-sized polymer particles and micron-sized polymer beads, wherein the polymer particles or beads or both are functionalized with phosphorus acid groups. The composition of the present invention is useful for providing a matte finish on substrates, such as leather, textiles, wallboard, decorative coatings, concrete, and wood, with improved stain resistance. The present invention also relates to a leather substrate coated with a clear matte finish comprising an acrylic or styrene-acrylic polymer film and micron-sized polymer beads, wherein the film or the beads or both are functionalized with a phosphorus acid monomer.

A multi-stage flexible acrylic resin comprises a branched polymer which is a reaction product of reactants comprising one or more monoethylenically unsaturated ester monomers, a chain transfer agent in an amount of 0.1 to 10 wt. %, and a crosslinker in an amount of 0.1 to 10 wt. %, wherein wt. % is based on total amount of reactants, provided the amount of crosslinker in moles is less than the amount of chain transfer agent in moles. A method for forming chrome-free retanned leather including: (a) contacting wet white (chrome-free tanned hide) with a retanning mixture comprising from 2% to 15%, by solids weight, based on the wet weight of the wet white, of an amphoteric polymer composition comprising amine functional units and acid functional units; and (b) applying a polymeric overcoat containing an acrylic copolymer with one or more metal transition elements, with a thickness of no greater than 100 microns, to the retanned wet white, is provided. The present invention also provides a chrome-free retanned leather formed by the method.

The present invention is related to a coating composition comprising a) an aqueous dispersion of acrylic or styrene-acrylic polymer particles functionalized with structural units of a monomer with keto functionality and structural units of a phosphorus acid monomer; b) a dispersant comprising structural units of a carboxylic acid monomer and a monomer with keto functionality; and c) a dihydrazide crosslinking agent. The composition of the present invention is useful for improving scrub resistance in a coating formed from the composition.

The present invention is a composition comprising a) an aqueous dispersion of TiOparticles encapsulated with an encapsulating acrylic or styrene-acrylic polymer comprising from structural units of diacetone acrylamide; and b) adipic acid dihydrazide. The present invention relates to a pre-paint composite comprising an aqueous slurry of TiOparticles and attached and unattached polymeric binder, and a sufficient amount of a secondary alcohol ethoxylate of the formula CHO(CHCHO)H to give 35 to 90 weight percent attachment of polymeric binder to the TiOparticles, based on the weight of total polymeric binder in the pre-paint composite, where x is from 15 to 50; and the O(CHCHO)H group is bonded to a CH group on the CHchain. The present invention also relates to a coatings composition containing the composite as well as a process for preparing the pre-paint composite and the coatings composition.
