An apparatus includes a substrate. A laser is deposited above the substrate. The laser includes one or more non-self-supporting layers of crystalline material. The laser has a length along a light path in a range of about 40 um to about 350 um. An optical input coupler is configured to receive light from the laser. A waveguide is deposited proximate the optical input coupler. The waveguide is configured to communicate light from the laser via the optical input coupler to a near-field transducer that directs energy resulting from plasmonic excitation to a recording medium.

A recording head that includes a bearing surface and a write pole having a front surface that forms a portion of the bearing surface. The recording head also includes a side shield for the write pole. The side shield includes a low saturation magnetization cap layer having a front surface that forms a portion of the bearing surface. A data writer may be configured with a write pole that has one or more sidewalls continuously extending from an air bearing surface. A write pole sidewall can have a plurality of different wall angles. A portion of a write pole sidewall contacting the air bearing surface can have a first wall angle with respect to a trailing edge of the write pole, parallel to the air bearing surface. A second portion of the write pole sidewall can be half or less of the first wall angle. A third portion of the write pole sidewall can be smaller than the second wall angle.

A write pole structure includes a write pole and a trailing shield wherein the write pole includes a high magnetic moment (HMM) material layer on a surface of the write pole facing the trailing shield, wherein the HMM material layer includes a laminated layer including a rare earth material layer and a transition metal layer.

A data storage system may have at least one data writer that incorporates a write pole that continuously extends from an air bearing surface. The write pole can be separated from the air bearing surface by a side shield that consists of a first magnetic layer positioned on the air bearing surface and a guard layer separated from the air bearing surface by the first magnetic layer. The guard layer may be configured with a different magnetic saturation flux density than the first magnetic layer.

A data storage device employing a data writer may configure the data writer with at least a write pole that is separated from a front shield on an air bearing surface. The front shield can be arranged to continuously extend from the air bearing surface a first throat height distal the write pole and a second throat height proximal the write pole with the first and second throat heights being different.

A data writer may be generally configured at least with a write pole adjacent to and separated from a side shield and a trailing shield. The side shield may be formed of a first material and configured with a trailing box region that is at least partially filled with a flux density insert formed of a second material that is different than the first material.
