There are disclosed sterilant compositions having improved biocompatibility comprising a sterilant such as sodium chlorite, an acid such as citric acid, and a buffer such as sodium bicarbonate, the compositions forming an isotonic solution with pH of approximately 7.3. The compositions are particularly useful for cleansing and sterilizing kidney hemodialysis apparatus with minimal disruption of the protein layer which forms on the internal surface of the hollow fibers of a dialysis membrane when a patient is undergoing treatment with the apparatus thus establishing improved biocompatibility between patient and apparatus. The compositions are also useful in other areas of technology, such as, for example, food and wine making technologies.

Sterilant compositions

A means for promoting the neutralization reaction between particulate calcium carbonate and ionized phosphate by adding a material formed by the reaction of particulate calcium carbonate and dilute hydrofluoric acid. The products of this invention are useful in lowering serum phosphate levels in patients undergoing renal dialysis, and are also useful as antacids. These products are also useful in the treatment of water and waste water to lower phosphate content.

A process for providing finely divided limestone products. Limestone is abrasively ground in an aqueous media in the presence of added dissolved carbon dioxide or in the presence of a soluble acid-forming compound, the anion of which forms a soluble calcium compound, or in the presence of both dissolved carbon dioxide and an acid-forming compound. A dry flue gas desulfurization process using the finely divided limestone product of the process of the invention is also provided.

Process for producing finely divided limestone for sulfur oxide removal

A dry particulate sulfite-containing material produced in a flue gas desulfurization process is oxidized and agglomerated in a fluidized bed reactor, wherein the material is fluidized in an oxygen-containing gas. The oxygen-containing gas which is supplied to the fluidized bed has a temperature below the agglomeration temperature of said particulate material. Due to the exothermic character of the oxidation, the temperature of the fluidized bed is maintained above the agglomeration temperature of the particulate material. Gas with entrained particles leaving the fluidzed bed are cooled during its passing through the freeboard of the fluidized bed reactor, whereby problems due to sticking of said entrained particles are avoided. At least a part of said entrained particles are recycled to the fluidized bed reactor. A fluidized bed reactor is provided suitable for performing the combined oxidation and agglomeration.

Method for treating by-products from flue gas

Finely divided limestone is produced by abrasively grinding limestone in an aqueous media in the presence of added dissolved carbon dioxide or in the presence of a soluble acid-forming compound, the anion of which forms a soluble calcium compound, or in the presence of both dissolved carbon dioxide and an acid-forming compound. The finely divided limestone is used in a dry flue gas desulfurization process.

Process for producing finely divided limestone

Spent absorbents resulting from desulfurization of flue gas in a spray drying-absorption process contain substantial amounts of sulfite, e.g. calcium sulfite. Said sulfite is oxidized into sulfate by heating of the spent absorbent in the presence of an oxygen-containing gas, preferably at temperatures of 350.degree.-600.degree. C. Thereby the spent absorbents may be converted into materials having industrial utility.

Process for flue gas desulfurization

Compositions comprising: (1) an acid-containing highly concentrated calcium salt solution which optionally can also contain magnesium ions and minor amounts of other physiologically acceptable metal ions; and (2) a particulate admixture comprising sodium bicarbonate, sodium chloride and, optionally, potassium chloride, dextrose and other physiologically acceptable materials which, in aqueous solution, are unreactive to sodium bicarbonate. Also presented is a method for preparing a dialysate comprising: (1) preparing a concentrated sodium bicarbonate solution by dissolving a particulate admixture comprising sodium bicarbonate, sodium chloride and, optionally, potassium chloride, dextrose and other physiologically acceptable materials unreactive to sodium bicarbonate in the presence of water; (2) preferably separately diluting: (a) an acid-containing highly concentrated calcium salt solution which optionally can also contain magnesium ions and minor amounts of other physiologically acceptable metal ions, and (b) the concentrated sodium bicarbonate solution; and (3) admixing the two resulting diluted solutions to form the dialysate.

A process for simultaneous removal of sulfur oxides (SO.sub.x) and nitrogen oxides (NO.sub.x) from gaseous mixtures (such as flue gases and industrial waste gases) containing them which comprises contacting the gaseous mixture with a particulate alkaline earth hydroxide and reaction products of the gaseous mixture and the hydroxide maintained in a moving bed reactor (preferably a fluid bed reactor) at a temperature of about 85.degree. C. to about 150.degree. C. in the presence of water vapor and oxygen and in the substantial absence of liquid water. A baghouse or other particle removal means preferably is employed to extract solid material such as fly ash and reaction products from the gaseous mixture being treated and to further capture unreacted SO.sub.x /NO.sub.x.

Fluid bed SOX/NOX process--'hydrated calcine absorption'

A process for removal of nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides from waste gases by contacting the waste gases with a particulate material comprising an alkaline earth based absorbent for sulfur oxides. Essential features are a reaction temperature of 85.degree.-145.degree. C., a maximum value of 3 for the ratio of nitrogen oxides to sulfur oxides, and the presence of oxygen and moisture. In its preferred form the process comprises a spray drying-absorption reaction followed by particle separation in a bag house. Removal efficiency is improved by the presence of minor amounts of sodium sulfite together with the alkaline earth based absorbent. Also a special conveyance of material may be applied to improve efficiency.

Process for removal of nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides from waste gases

Strong dense shaped articles such as pellets suitable for use as gravel substitutes are produced by the described method from solid fly ash-containing water materials obtained by a lime based dry scrubbing flue gas desulfurization operation. In this method the dry ash-containing waste powder, which also contains calcium sulfite or sulfate reaction products and unreacted lime, is first uniformly contacted with a critical amount of water and then immediately compacted at a critical compaction ratio to provide a handleable green body in which the fly ash particles are positioned with respect to one another so that the interstitial spaces are sufficient to accommodate the volumetric changes in wthe cementitious materials without any deleterious expansion of the article as the article is cured.
