Bottle carton

A reclosable carton for packaging a plurality of cans and having interconnected top, bottom and side walls and end closure panels, includes a reclosable opening panel struck from one of the walls and foldably joined thereto along one edge thereof and severable therefrom along other parts of its periphery, a lap panel disposed in flat face contacting relation with a part of the inner surface of the wall from which the reclosing opening panel is struck and disposed in overlapping relation with an edge of the reclosable opening panel along which the reclosable opening panel is severable from the wall, and an edge of the reclosable opening panel being arranged for tucking into engagement with the inner surface of the lap panel so as to reclose the carton.

Carrier side and end walls foldably joined at their end edges to form a tubular sleeve of generally rectangular cross sectional configuration includes a reinforcing panel foldably joined to the top edge of each of the end walls and secured in flat face contacting relation with the inner surface thereof together with an anchoring panel struck from each of the reinforcing panels and foldably joined to the associated end wall and with top closure panels foldably joined to the top edge of the side walls respectively and secured to the anchoring panels together with a bottom wall structure secured to the lower portions of the sleeve.

An end loaded carton for a plurality of cans includes foldably joined top, bottom and side walls forming a tubular structure and having end closure panels, one wall of the carton being of double ply construction having inner and outer panels, at least one thickening panel foldably joined to the inner ply and being folded into flat face contacting relation with the inner ply to form a three ply wall in engagement with the can ends.

A reusable open top case having rectangular interconnected bottom, side and end panels is provided with a disposable cover which includes a top wall overlying the open top of the case and which also includes side and end walls foldably joined to the top wall of the cover together with web structure interconnecting the corners of the side and end walls.

A heavy duty carrying handle for a can carton formed from a unitary blank and which includes interconnected bottom, top and side walls together with end closure structure and wherein the top wall is of double ply construction having inner and outer panels, the handle having a transverse elongated opening formed in the inner panel and having spaced apart side edges, a pair of transverse fold lines formed in the outer panel in near coincidence with the side edges of the transverse elongated opening, a pair of transverse handle flaps struck from the outer panel and respectively joined thereto along the transverse fold lines, the transverse handle flaps having coincidental transverse edges defined by a transverse perforated slit along which the handle flaps are separable to accommodate inward folding of the handle flaps through the transverse elongated opening.

A tray formed from paperboard includes a quadrilateral main panel having right angle corners, a pair of end panels foldably joined respectively to opposite end edges of the main panel, a pair of side panels foldably joined respectively to opposite side edges of the main panel, a major web panel foldably joined to each end edge of each of said end panels, a minor web panel foldably joined to each end edge of each side panel, each major and each minor web panel being foldably joined to each other at each corner of the main panel along a common fold line, each major web panel having a major angle of approximately fifty-seven degrees defined by the common fold line and by the adjacent end edge of the associated end panel and each minor web panel having a minor angle defined by its common fold line and by the adjacent end edge of the associated side panel, the side and end panels being approximately perpendicular to the main panel and the major and minor web panels being disposed in the flat face contacting relation to each other, and adhesive means securing a part of each major web panel to the end of the associated side panel so as to secure the associated minor web panel therebetween.

An end loaded carton having top, bottom and side walls foldably adjoined to form a tubular structure is provided with closure structure for the lower portion of the ends of the tubular structure which includes a triangular corner panel hingedly connected with the lower part of each end edge of each side wall and having a crease line extending divergently upward from the lower corner to each side wall, a pair of closure panels foldably adjoined to said corner panel along said crease lines at each end of the carton and forming a closure structure for the lower part of each end of the carton, a bottom end panel foldably joined to each end edge of the bottom wall together with a connecting web panel foldably joined to the bottom edge of each closure panel and to each of the bottom end panels at each corner of the carton.

End loaded carton

A can carton having interconnected top, bottom and side walls and end closure panels is provided with a transverse flap formed in the top wall and including spaced parallel side edges and arcuate end slits interconnecting adjacent side edges of the flap, one of the side edges of the flap being defined by a perforated severance line and the other side edge of the flap being defined by a fold line together with stress relieving slits formed in the top and side walls which extend from each arcuate slit into the adjacent side wall. The point of intersection of the stress relieving slit in each side wall with the junction between each side and top wall is offset longitudinally from the severance line defining a side edge of the handle flap. According to a feature of the invention in one form each side edge of the handle flap may be defined by a perforated line which may function as a severance line or as a fold line.

A can carton having interconnected top, bottom and side walls and end closure panels is provided with a perforated transverse slit extending completely across one carton wall and having end projections extending into the two carton walls interconnected therewith together with a pair of transverse handle flaps struck from the top carton wall or from the top carton wall and from the side walls interconnected therewith and foldably joined respectively thereto by arcuate transverse fold lines.

The invention provides a loading finger for a drop loading mechanism which finger incorporates a guide plate. In a drop loading grid set the loading fingers define passageways through which bottles are dropped into the cells of cartons. In order to protect the partitions between adjacent carton cells during drop-loading, opposed loading fingers which are located in adjacent passageways have guide plates which include upper portions overlapped with one another above the uppermost edge of a carton partition during drop loading and include lower portions which are spaced apart one on either side of and below the uppermost edge of a carton partition.

Guide mechanism for loading cartons

A can carton of the end loading type includes foldably joined top, bottom and side walls forming a tubular structure, an end flap foldably joined to the end edges of the top, bottom and side walls, collapsible web structure disposed at each corner of the carton and foldably joined to the adjacent end of each of the adjacent end flaps which are foldably joined to the bottom and top walls and to the bevelled end edges of a projecting end portion of each side wall, the web structure being disposed in collapsed condition adjacent the end of the adjacent can, and a fold line interconnecting the projecting end portions of each of the side walls to facilitate manipulating the end closing structure of the carton to closed position after loading is completed, such manipulation comprising folding each projecting end portion of each side wall outwardly to draw the end flaps of the top and bottom walls inwardly and then folding the end flap at each end of each side wall upwardly thereby to collapse the web structure and to position such web structure in overlying relation relative to the adjacent can end.

Method of closing an end loading carton

For preventing damage to the tops and bottoms of end loading stacked can cartons, a reinforcing panel is affixed to the inside surface of the top or bottom walls of the carton or to both such walls so as to prevent coincidental can chimes on the upper ends of cans in a lower carton from damaging the top wall of its associated carton and the bottom wall of a carton stacked thereabove and without which the lower ends of the cans of the upper carton may cooperate with the chimes of the cans in the lower cartons to effect substantial damage to the top of the lower carton and to the bottom of the upper carton. For facilitating entry of the cans into an end loading carton and for preventing damaging engagement between the cans and the reinforcing panels, an inwardly extending embossment may be formed in the carton wall adjacent the end edge of the reinforcement panel and if desired the end edge of the reinforcement panel adjacent the end of the carton through which the cans are loaded may be bevelled or may be otherwise configured so as to prevent damage to the carton due to loading of the cans.

A can carton having interconnected top, bottom and side walls and end closure panels is provided with a perforated transverse slit extending completely across one carton wall and having end projections disposed in substantially perpendicular relation to the one carton wall and extending into the two carton walls interconnected therewith together with a pair of transverse handle flaps struck from the one carton wall and foldably joined respectively thereto by transverse fold lines generally parallel to the transverse slit and spaced therefrom on opposite sides by a distance approximately equal to one-half the length of each of the end projections.
