A system includes a reciprocating piston engine configured to output torque to drive a load. The system includes an engine speed sensor operatively coupled with the engine and configured to output an engine speed signal. The system includes an electronic control system operatively coupled with the powertrain. The electronic control system is configured to determine an engine acceleration in response to the engine speed signal, and detect a misfire of the engine in response to the engine acceleration.

An electric power generation system () is disclosed, which includes an electric power generator () driven by a four-cycle internal combustion engine (). The engine () includes a plurality of reciprocating cylinders (C-C) each rotatably coupled to a crankshaft (), which drives the electric power generator (). A controller () is included that is operable to control fueling to start the engine () as a function of engine temperature and determine initial engine start-up as a function of rotational engine speed. This controller () regulates engine acceleration until a target engine speed is reached from initial start-up. Once this target speed is reached, the controller () provides a speed governor function.
