A torsional vibration damper mechanism for damping tortional vibration of a first drive shaft, a second drive shaft, or both. The torsional vibration damper mechanism includes a third drive shaft mechanically coupled to the first drive shaft, the second drive shaft, or both. The third drive shaft is configured to reduce or substantially to eliminate torsional vibration in the first drive shaft, the second drive shaft, or both.

Torsional vibration damper mechanism for gas turbine engine

A gas turbine engine includes a fan located at a forward portion of the gas turbine engine, and a compressor section and a turbine section arranged in serial flow order. The compressor section and the turbine section together define a core airflow path. A rotary member is rotatable with the fan and with a low pressure turbine of the turbine section. The low pressure turbine includes a rotating drum to which a first airfoil structure is connected and extends radially inward toward the rotary member. A torque frame connects the rotating drum to the rotary member and transfers torque from the first airfoil structure mounted to the rotating drum to the rotary member. The torque frame includes an inner disk mounted to the rotary member, an outer ring and a second airfoil structure formed separately from the outer ring and connected thereto by a releasable connecting structure. The second airfoil structure extends radially inward from the outer ring toward the inner disk.

Methods, apparatus, systems and articles of manufacture are disclosed. A shroud assembly of a gas turbine engine includes: a first shroud arm having a first end and a second end, the first end to couple to an outer wall and the second end to couple to a first shroud pad, and a second shroud arm having a first end and a second end, the first end to couple to the outer wall and the second end to couple to a second shroud pad, at least one of the first shroud pad or the second shroud pad to move radially outward toward the outer wall in response to a rotor blade contacting the at least one of the first shroud pad or the second shroud pad.

Compliant shroud designs with variable stiffness

A seal assembly for a rotary machine. The seal assembly includes a rotor and a stator. The rotor is rotatable about a rotational axis and has a rotor seal face. The stator has a stator seal face. The stator seal face is positioned opposite the rotor seal face and faces the rotor seal face with a gap therebetween. A portion of one of the rotor and the stator is formed of (i) a shape memory alloy or (ii) a first metal and a second metal with the second metal having a coefficient of thermal expansion different from the first metal. The seal assembly is characterized by a seal clearance compliance ratio (SCCR) from 20% to 90%.

A support assembly for a bearing of a gas turbine engine includes a shaft extending along an axial direction. The support assembly includes an outer race positioned radially exterior to the bearing such that the outer race supports the bearing. Additionally, the support assembly includes a shape memory alloy damper positioned radially exterior to the outer race and at least partially supporting the outer race. Moreover, the shape memory alloy damper includes a plurality of sleeves. One or more sleeves of the plurality of sleeves include a shape memory alloy material.

An epicyclic gearbox is configured to transfer rotational motion between a first rotating component and a second rotating component of the gas turbine engine. The gearbox includes a centrally located sun gear, two or more planet gears circumscribing the sun gear, and a ring gear circumscribing the plurality of planet gears. The gearbox is configured such that the sun gear is drivingly coupled to the first rotating component, such that rotation of the sun gear causes rotation of each planet gear, and such that the ring gear rotates relative to the plurality of planet gears. The gearbox includes one or more shape memory alloy dampers provided in association with the sun gear, the ring gear, and/or the plurality of planet gears. The shape memory alloy damper(s) is configured in order to reduce vibrations transferred through the epicyclic gearbox to the frame, the first rotating component, and/or the second rotating component.

A bearing system is configured to surround a rotor along a circumferential direction corresponding to the rotor. The rotor is extended along an axial direction co-directional to a centerline axis of the rotor. The bearing system includes a body from which a plurality of first support members is each extended, and wherein the plurality of first support members is spaced apart from one another along the circumferential direction. Each first support member includes a first axial support arm extended along the axial direction and a first radial support arm extended from the first axial support arm along a radial direction. The first radial support arm is configured to position a bearing element in contact with a bearing surface at the rotor.

An airfoil arrangement for a gas turbine engine may include a support device using a shape memory alloy to support and control the airfoil. The support device may be formed as part of a fan blade. The arrangement may be configured to reduce overall weight and dimensions of the gas turbine engine.

A variable stiffness damper system including an inner spring positioned between a first wall and a second wall, in which the inner spring includes a first member and a second member each coupled together at a distal end by an inner bumper. The first member and the second member are each contoured toward one another. The first member, the second member, and the inner bumper form a cavity therebetween. An outer spring is positioned between the inner spring and the first wall or the second wall. The outer spring includes a spring arm contoured toward the inner spring. The outer spring includes an outer bumper positioned between the inner bumper and the first wall or the second wall. The inner bumper and the outer bumper are selectively couplable to one another based on a load applied to the damper system.

An airfoil arrangement for a gas turbine engine may include a clearance device using a shape memory alloy movable to provide clearance between an airfoil and one or more other components of the gas turbine engine. The clearance device may be formed as part of a fan blade. The arrangement may be configured to reduce overall weight and dimensions of the gas turbine engine.

A casing for a bearing of a gas turbine engine includes a shaft extending along an axial direction. The casing includes an attachment feature at a radially outermost portion of the casing. The attachment feature is configured to be coupled to a static frame of the gas turbine engine. The casing further includes a plurality of support arms extend from the attachment feature to a radially innermost portion of the casing. At least one support arm of the plurality of support arms defines an internal cavity. Further, the radially innermost portion of the casing is configured to be coupled to an outer race of the bearing. The casing additionally includes a reinforcing member housed at least partially within the internal cavity of at least one support arm. Moreover, the reinforcing member includes a shape memory alloy material.

A gas turbine engine including a first rotor assembly comprising a first drive shaft extended along a longitudinal direction; a housing coupled to the first rotor assembly to provide rotation of the first rotor assembly around an axial centerline; a first accessory assembly, wherein the first accessory assembly sends and/or extracts energy to and from the first rotor assembly; and a first clutch assembly disposed between the first rotor assembly and the first accessory assembly. Structure and method to mitigate rotor bow in turbine engine

A composite fan casing for a gas turbine engine defining a central axis is generally provided. The composite fan casing includes a core having a plurality of core layers of reinforcing fibers bonded together with a thermosetting polymeric resin and having an outer surface. The composite fan casing further includes at least one stiffener integrally coupled to an aft portion of the outer surface of the core relative to the central axis. Additionally, the at least one stiffener comprises an elastic material.
