The device includes a heat exchanger and a liquid water knockout disposed downstream of the close-coupled catalyst. The device includes a four-valve system configured to dynamically adjust a flow path of exhaust from the internal combustion engine through the underbody catalyst, hydrocarbon trap, or both, to reduce emissions. A method for reducing emissions including feeding an exhaust gas from the internal combustion engine to the close-coupled catalyst, producing a catalyzed exhaust gas. The method includes flowing the catalyzed exhaust gas from the close-coupled catalyst to the four-valve system.

Active hydrocarbon trap for reduction of emissions from internal combustion engines using a three-valve configuration

Described is an engine with a camshaft having a single cam profile, a gas intake manifold, and an exhaust gas rebreather system for receiving an exhaust gas from the engine. The exhaust gas rebreather system includes a main exhaust gas outlet configured to receive the exhaust gas. An exhaust gas rebreather line of the exhaust gas rebreather system returns a portion of the exhaust gas in the main exhaust gas outlet to the gas intake manifold. A variable nozzle turbocharger having one or more variable nozzle vanes is in fluid connection with the main exhaust gas outlet. The exhaust rebreather system further includes an exhaust gas recirculation valve and a back pressure valve. The exhaust gas recirculation valve is disposed in the exhaust gas rebreather line and in fluid connection with the main exhaust gas outlet, and the back pressure valve downstream of the variable nozzle turbocharger.

Active hydrocarbon trap for reduction of emissions from internal combustion engines using an electrically-heated catalyst

A hydrogen-diesel dual-fuel engine that includes an engine block, where the engine block includes a cylinder outfitted with at least two hydrogen fuel injectors and a piston. The engine further includes an air-handling system that includes an intake manifold, an intake pipe, an exhaust pipe, a variable geometry turbocharger, and an exhaust gas recirculation system configured to recirculate exhaust gases from the exhaust pipe to the intake manifold. The engine further includes a two-step camshaft, where the two-step camshaft is configured with the air-handling system for exhaust re-breathing and late intake valve closing, and a port fuel injector system that provides hydrogen gas to the at least two hydrogen fuel injectors. The engine further includes a diesel injector, a common-rail fuel injection system, a plurality of sensors, and a controller configured to receive engine data from the plurality of sensors and to control operation of the hydrogen-diesel dual-fuel engine.

Method to enhance the performance of a heavy-duty diesel-H2 dual-fuel engine through engine system optimization

An engine includes multiple cylinders having at least one deactivated cylinder and at least one activated cylinder, multiple intake valves, wherein each intake valve is positioned in an intake port of each of the cylinders, multiple exhaust valves, wherein each exhaust valve is positioned in an exhaust port of each of the cylinders, and an exhaust pulse valve positioned along an exhaust main passage fluidly connected between a turbine inlet to a turbocharger and the exhaust valves. Methods are disclosed that include deactivating the deactivated cylinders and operating the activated cylinders, while the exhaust pulse valve is actuated by fully opening the exhaust pulse valve when at least one of the multiple exhaust valves to the at least one activated cylinder is open and fully closing the exhaust pulse valve when each of the multiple exhaust valves to the at least one activated cylinder is closed.
