Embodiments relate generally to methods and systems for refreshing filter media within a respirator and indicating end of service life for the filter media. A respirator may include a rollable filter media configured to be refreshed by rolling the filter media onto a roller. A rolling mechanism may rotate the roller, allowing for a fresh section of filter media to be placed in the air path of the respirator. The rolling mechanism may be controlled automatically by a motor and/or manually.

Compact powered air purifying respirator with auto-change filter and built-in end of service life indicator

A system and method for completing fit tests on a respirator mask, and indicating end of service life for one or more elements of the respirator mask. The system includes an electronics module mounted on the interior of the face mask. The module includes a pressure sensor, and possibly other sensors, such as gas sensors, temperature sensors, and humidity sensors. The module may detect the pressure on the interior of the mask during fit tests to detect any leaks in the mask. The module may be used for positive and negative pressure fit tests. Additionally, the module may include one or more indicators (lights, sounds, vibrations) for alerting a user during a fit test. The module may also detect end of service life by analyzing the sensor data, and may indicate end of service life to the user.

Some embodiments may comprise methods for determining the alarm status for a PASS, wherein a plurality of motion sensing elements may be utilized by a motion detection system, thereby reducing false alarms. A motion detection system may comprise two motion sensing elements, with one motion sensing element located near the chest and shoulders of a user, and one motion sensing element located near the hips and back of a user.

System and method of oxygen deficiency warning in a powered air purifying respirator

A self-calibrating powered air purifying respirator (PAPR). The PAPR comprises an electric motor mechanically coupled to a blower; an air flow sensor, and a controller coupled to the air flow sensor and to the electric motor. The controller is configured to automatically execute a one-time self-calibration by driving the electric motor to a predefined operation point, receiving an indication from the air flow sensor, determining a reference parameter based on the indication from the air flow sensor, and storing the reference parameter, wherein after completion of the one-time self-calibration the controller controls the electric motor based on the stored reference parameter.

Some embodiments further relate to the use of a PASS device in an SCBA. Embodiments may also relate to the design of piezoelectric driver circuits operable to sound one or more piezoelectric sound generators, wherein the driver circuit design may be low cost and energy efficient.
