A ranging operation between a first wireless device and a second wireless may be performed by: sending, to the second wireless device, a data frame including a request for the second wireless device to report its actual SIFS duration to the first wireless device; determining a time of departure (TOD) of the data frame; receiving, from the second wireless device, a response frame including SIFS information indicative of the actual SIFS duration of the second wireless device; determining a time of arrival (TOA) of the response frame; and determining a round trip time (RTT) of the data frame and the response frame using the TOD of the data frame, the TOA of the response frame, and the actual SIFS duration of the second wireless device.

IEEE 802.11 enhancements for high efficiency positioning

Disclosed are implementations that include a method, performed by a network control device, including sending a first instruction to a first device to send a first measurement signal, and sending a second instruction to a second device to receive the first measurement signal. Following receipt of a first acknowledgement signal from the target mobile device, the first and second devices change their roles so the second device sends, and the first device receives, a second measurement signal, and the first and second devices receive a second acknowledgement signal from the target device. Position of the target device is determined based on timing measurements associated with the first and second measurement signals, the first and second acknowledgement signals, and on known positions of the first and second devices. Another network device is selected to perform additional measurements upon a determination that a desired accuracy of the position determined was not achieved.

Positioning using observer-based time-of-arrival measurements

Disclosed is a system, apparatus, computer readable storage medium, and method to perform a bandwidth efficient network based positioning (NBP). A positioning request for a mobile device is received within an environment, the environment comprising one or more access points (APs). An AP coverage area including the mobile device is determined. A NBP load for the AP is measured, wherein the NBP load comprises a direct NBP load and an indirect NBP load. If the NBP load is less than a threshold, the AP is instructed to process the first positioning request. Multiple APs may process positioning requests concurrently and positioning requests may be scheduled according to timeout and/or relative expiration.

Method and apparatus for network based positioning

Systems, methods, and devices enable group associations based on network determined location information. The various embodiments enable the ad-hoc creation of mobile device groups based on network determined locations. In an embodiment, a server may determine the location of a mobile device and based on the mobile device being located in a pairing zone may add the mobile device to a group. In an embodiment, the server may add the mobile device to the group following the occurrence of a trigger event, such as the mobile device pausing in a given pairing zone for a period of time. In an embodiment, the server may identify that mobile devices are located within a pairing zone and may add all the mobile devices in the pairing zone to the same group.

Group association based on network determined location

A method for network-based positioning of a mobile device as described herein includes selecting a first set of access points (APs) to take first positioning measurements from the mobile device; obtaining the first positioning measurements from the first set of APs; selecting, based on the first positioning measurements, a second set of APs to take second positioning measurements from the mobile device; obtaining the second positioning measurements from the second set of APs; and determining a location of the mobile device based on the first positioning measurements and the second positioning measurements.

Access point selection for network-based positioning

A method of determining a position of a target device includes: sending a first measurement signal from a first known-position device; receiving the first measurement signal at a second known-position device; receiving a first acknowledgement signal from the target device at the first known-position device and at the second known-position device; determining the position of the target device using first timing information associated with the first measurement signal and the first acknowledgement signal, a first position of the first known-position device, and a second position of the second known-position device.

Bluetooth file transfers using FTP do not provide upper-layer reliability checking and rely on the Bluetooth device physical layer providing reliable data to upper layers of a Bluetooth stack. However, reliability checks implemented by the physical layer are typically not very robust and in some cases may fail to detect errors, thus may provide corrupted data to the upper layers for further processing and may result in data corruption/transfer failure. Non-FTP Bluetooth file transfers are typically more robust when it comes to reliability checking because of upper layer reliability checks. Functionality can be implemented to vary packet transmission parameters depending on a Bluetooth profile implemented on a communication link. A packet error rate of received packets can be compared against a different set of thresholds depending on whether the Bluetooth profile is an FTP profile. Appropriate values of packet transmission parameters can be selected based on the above comparison.

Profile-based packet rate adaptation for wireless systems

A network based positioning (NBP) system is disclosed that allows any of its access points (APs) to initiate ranging operations with a station device (STA), regardless of whether the STA is in power save mode and regardless of whether a particular AP is currently associated with the STA. For example, to initiate ranging operations with the STA from a non-associated AP, the non-associated AP obtains the TSF timer of the associated AP, and then uses the obtained TSF timer to derive the associated AP's beacon transmission schedule and thereby determine when the STA's corresponding wake-up periods occur. Thereafter, the non-associated AP can initiate ranging operations with the STA during the STA wake-up periods, thereby ensuring that probes sent from the non-associated AP will arrive at the STA while the STA is awake from power save mode.

Method for ranging to a station in power saving mode

A wireless network is disclosed that allows an access point (AP) to keep a station (STA) in an awake state for an extended duration by periodically sending 'keep-awake' frames to the STA. The keep-awake frames may be NULL frames having an asserted 'more data' bit. For some embodiments, the AP transmits a beacon frame to the STA, wherein the beacon frame includes an asserted traffic indication bit that causes the STA to remain in the awake state for an additional wake-up period. Then, the AP transmits a sequence of keep-awake frames to the STA, wherein each keep-awake frame causes the STA to remain in the awake state for an additional time period.

Method and apparatus for extending an awake state of a station

Techniques for determining whether a mobile device crosses a boundary defined by a first wireless access point (WAP) and a second fixed-location WAP are provided. A method according to these techniques includes receiving, at a mobile device, information defining a boundary defined by first and second fixed-location WAPs, the boundary being defined at least in part based on a ratio of a round trip time (RTT) between the mobile device and the first fixed-location WAP to a ratio of a RTT between the mobile device and the second fixed-location WAP, determining the ratio of the RTT between the mobile device and the first fixed-location WAP to a ratio of the RTT between the mobile device and the second fixed-location WAP, determining whether the mobile device has crossed the boundary, and triggering an event in response to the mobile device crossing the boundary.

Relative positioning applications in wireless devices

Interference can impair communications of collocated wireless devices or wireless devices communicating in close proximity to each other. In implementations where the communications of one wireless device have a higher priority as compared to the communications of the other wireless device, the low priority communications should not impair or interfere with the high priority communications. Functionality can be implemented to control when the low priority wireless device transmits based on a current state (e.g., active/inactive) of the collocated high priority wireless device, a frequency separation between communication channels of the wireless devices, strengths of signals received by the wireless devices, etc. Transmit power of the low priority wireless device may be controlled so that the low priority communications do not impair the high priority communications.

Discovery and connection coexistence mechanism for wireless devices

This disclosure is directed to systems and methods that provide control of transmitted signal power that do not require the use of an external power detector. By determining the expected transmit power based upon conditions such as temperature or voltage, the settings of the transmitters amplifier can be adjusted to more closely match the desired transmit power.

System and method for providing open loop transmit power control

System and method for operating a wireless narrowband receiver. A signal may be received on a channel of the wireless narrowband receiver. At least a portion of the signal may be received from a first wireless narrowband transmitter. The wireless narrowband receiver may implement an adaptive frequency hopping algorithm. It may be determined if interference is present on the channel and one or more errors are detected in receiving the signal. In response to determining that interference is present on the channel and one or more errors are detected in receiving the signal, received signal strength of one or more neighboring frequencies of the channel may be measured, and the resulting measurements may be stored in a memory. The measurements may be used to determine interference sources interference on the channel.

Measuring received signal strength on neighboring frequencies of a channel with interference in a wireless device

In visual display devices such as LCD devices with backlight illumination, the backlight typically consumes most of device battery power. In the interest of displaying a given pixel pattern at a minimized backlight level, the pattern can be transformed while maintaining image quality, with a transform determined from pixel luminance statistics. Aside from, or in addition to such minimizing, a transform also can be used for image enhancement, for a displayed image better to meet a visual perception quality. In either case, the transform preferably is constrained for enforcing one or several display attributes.

Video enhancement and display power management

Many areas of technology need highly accurate data compression to provide small, multifunctional devices. In the area of communication governed by the IEEE 802.11 standards, a wireless device could significantly improve its performance by using its calibration data. Moreover, because of the increased mobility of users, a wireless device should be able to operate in different regulatory domains. This flexibility requires access to significant amounts of data regarding such regulatory domains. Advantageously, piecewise linear abstraction and/or mapping can be used to significantly reduce the amount of stored data while ensuring accuracy in reproducing the total data at a later point in time.
