Microphone sub-assemblies for direct mounting on a telephone handset inner substrate comprise a tubular housing containing a microphone having terminal pins electrically connected within the tubular housing to leads extending through the housing tubular wall. The leads provide contact springs for spring biased contact with conductive lands on the substrate. In one embodiment, the contact springs comprise coiled springs and, in another embodiment, the contact springs comprise leaf springs terminating in arcuate cam surfaces.

Spring biased microphone sub-assemblies

Acoustic component sub-assemblies for direct mounting on a telephone handset inner substrate comprise a tubular housing containing a component having terminal pins electrically connected within the tubular housing to coil springs extending outwardly through an open end of the tubular housing. The coil springs serve as component terminals for spring biased contact with conductive lands on the substrate. The tubular housing is press fitted within a seat on the substrate and contacted by the handset outer housing for being tightly clamped within the substrate seat.

Impact-tolerant mounting of acoustic components

A fastener for detachably coupling a housing, such as a battery pack, to an appliance, such as a wireless terminal, is disclosed. In use, the fastener is disposed in a housing. When a user applies a force to the fastener to release the housing from the appliance, the fastener rotates about an axis, causing an engagement feature of the fastener to rotate away from the appliance, thereby decoupling the fastener from the appliance. The fastener includes a biasing member which provides a restoring force that keeps the fastener coupled to the appliance in the absence of a decoupling force. In some embodiments, the fastener includes various features suitable for reducing stress that accumulates in the biasing member as it rotates during decoupling. Such features include a stress-reducing surface, and an offset between the stress-reducing surface and the axis of rotation.

Microphone sub-assemblies for direct mounting on a telephone handset inner substrate comprise a tubular wall containing a microphone comprising a cylindrical can and elongated terminal pins extending from the can. The tubular wall is formed from a strip of an elastomeric material wrapped around and adhered to the microphone with the microphone terminal pins extending directly through the wall, in hermetic fit therewith, and radially from the wall. The sub-assembly is mounted in a telephone internal substrate by inserting the microphone terminal pins into a connector on the substrate. Both the sub-assembly and the substrate are firmly secured within a telephone housing with an open end of the tubular housing aligned with a sound admitting port through the telephone housing.

Microphone sub-assemblies using elastomeric housings

A hinge assembly which has a limited number of stable positions and in which the hinge automatically moves to the closest of such stable positions is disclosed. The movement of the hinge is accomplished in one illustrative embodiment by positioning the protrusion on one of a pair of ramps inclined opposite to one another and toward the adjacent recess so that the parts of the hinge rotate relative to one another, moving the protrusion into the adjacent recess. The protrusion is pressed against the ramps and the grooves by a connecting portion that joins the arm portions and is flexed when the hinge parts are assembled so as to bias the arm portions toward one another.
