Systems and methods are described for secure and seamless roaming between internal and external networks. Double and triple tunnels may be used to connect a mobile node to a correspondent host. A mobile node may include the ability to connect to two networks simultaneously to enable seamless roaming between networks.

Secure and seamless WAN-LAN roaming

A system and method are provided by which a wireless network service provider is able to provide and maintain a high level of quality of service for terminals in the corresponding network, by overcoming problems that result in a diminished quality of service, including handoff delays as terminals move between cells in a network and the uncertainly as to which cell the individual terminals are moving to as they roam within the network. Providing and maintaining a high level of quality of service in a wireless network includes recording a history of movements of a terminal within the wireless network, analyzing the movements of the terminal within the wireless network to compute a probability distribution of the terminal's target location, and allocating network resources, including bandwidth and priority scheme, to the terminal based on the probability distribution for the terminal.

System and method for quality of service management in mobile wireless networks

A system and method for equalizing traffic between antenna beams is described. Aspects of the system and method may vary the beam widths to attempt to equalize traffic based on non-real-time communications and/or non-real-time communications.

A system and method are provided by which a network operator is able to detect fraudulent use of a subscriber's terminal, regardless of whether or not the subscriber is aware of the fraudulent use of her terminal. Detecting unauthorized terminal use in a wireless network includes recording a history of terminal location and registration patterns, analyzing the recorded history of location and registration patterns of the terminal, monitoring current location and registration patterns of the terminal, and requesting clarification when a deviation between said statistical analysis of the location and registration patterns of said terminal and said current location and registration patterns of said terminal is detected.

Fraud detection techniques for wireless network operators

This document describes Toll Free IP (TIP), a business model and its enabling methods to provide no-charge-to-user ('toll-free') connectivity through IP-based access networks (e.g., public wireless hotspot networks based on IEEE 802.11), which may be operated by different network operators. With TIP, the use of networks to communicate with a toll-free IP destination will be paid by the owner of the toll-free IP destination. A toll-free IP destination can be identified in many ways, e.g., by a toll-free IP address, toll-free Internet Domain Name, a toll-free Universal Resource Identifier or Universal Resource Locator. TIP enables a user to use networks without prior service subscriptions with network or service providers and without any special terminal software or hardware for gaining permission to use a network. It allows users to use more access networks, i.e., larger 'footprints', than any individual network operator or aggregator can provide. With TIP, a service provider can provide services over IP-based access networks without the need to have business arrangements with each individual network operator or aggregator. TIP can also be used to enable other value-added services such as Prepaid IP, Collect IP, Selective Charging, and a single prepaid account across access networks of multiple operators or aggregators and even across wireless LANs (e.g., public hotspots and enterprise wireless LANs) and cellular networks.

Method and systems for toll-free internet protocol communication services

For IP-based wireless systems in which base stations are connected by an IP network and communication among base stations is not controlled by the centralized management, a new system and method for realizing soft handoff by using encapsulation in order to distribute and gather a reproduced packet by the serving base station with other base stations and to transfer the serving role between the base stations as the mobile station moves is described.

Aspects of the invention provide a method and system for managing or coordinating data transmission in a Local Area Network (LAN) such that Quality of Service (QoS) concerns are met. A LAN resource manager (LRM) is provided for managing the LAN resources by providing solutions for providing users with several levels of QoS. Once the LRM admits a user at a certain QoS level, the level is assured within the LAN for as long as the user is in the LAN. A user may submit a request to transmit data to the LRM. The LRM may determine if time allocation is possible and allocate the time slots for data transmission. The LRM may send time slot allocation information to an Access Server in a LAN, which may inform the user of the time slot allocation and prepare a queue according to the slot allocation information.

Local area network resource manager

An arrangement including a scannable matrix for predicting the occurrence of a future collision of frequency hops of the channel hopping patterns on the respective activated first paths of a Bluetooth packet transmission system is described. A first coordinate of the matrix defines columns representative of a selectable window of N successive future time slots of the channel hopping patterns, and a second coordinate of the matrix defines rows each exhibiting the successive frequency hops of the patterns segments transmitted on a separate one of the activated channels during such window. The first coordinate is scanned to detect the occurrence, if any, of identical frequency hops appearing at an intersection of the then-scanned column and at least a pair of the rows. If a particular scan does not detect an occurrence of such identical frequency hops in any of the time slots of the scanned window, the first coordinate may be incremented by a selected number of time slots at the end of the scan, and the scan is then successively repeated for each new window that results. If and when identical frequency hops are detected in a particular future time slot during a scan, the channel hopping pattern(s) on a subset of the affected channels may be suitably altered to avoid the predicted collision.

Frequency hop collision prediction in a multi-channel, bluetooth-enabled packet transmission system

A telephone subscriber having both a wireline and a cellular telephone can switch calls between these phones. A routing table identifies that a subscriber is entitled to this service, and a look up table maintains the telephone numbers of the two different telephones. Upon detection of a unique signal indicating a request for switching a call connected to one of the telephones to the other telephone, a connection is made to the other telephone, the two connections are bridged, and then the first connection is dropped. The routing table may be maintained in a central office and the look up table may be maintained in a mobile switching center or a fixed cellular mobility agent.

Switching telephone calls between wireline and cellular telephones

The transmission of unnecessary assignment and validation information to mobile terminals in wireless IP networks is automatically blocked. Assignment and validation information originating with a mobile terminal is discarded by a base station if the information is not directly received by the base station from a mobile terminal. Assignment and validation information originating with an IP address server is broadcast only to those mobile terminals awaiting assignment or validation information using a local broadcast IP address. The validation and assignment is automatically begun once a mobile terminal enters a new subnet by resetting the mobile terminal's IP address to the broadcast address for assignment and validation requests and then broadcasting validation and, if necessary, assignment requests to the wireless IP network.

Dynamic assignment and validation of IP addresses in wireless IP networks

A method and system is provided for periodically and dynamically updating allocation pools of IP address which are reserved for wireless or wireline hosts. A system IP address server controls an entire address pool, contains predictive analysis logic, performs a predictive analysis, partitions the IP addresses into distinct address pools, and maintains 'wireless guard bands' of IP addresses for wireless users to ensure that a higher priority address pool is never exhausted before an address pool which has a lower priority.

Method for dynamically allocating IP addresses for time sensitive hosts based on priorities and guard bands

A technique for assigning an address ('shadow address') to a mobile station that is compatible with the layer-2 address on the wireline network which serves the mobile station. The shadow address is then used as a wireline identifier for the destination address for frames ultimately destined for the mobile station. The shadow address is stored in a watch list for serving base stations, and any base station receiving a frame with a shadow address in its watch list process the frame to forward it the to mobile station. In this way, the shadow address facilitates carrying out soft handoff and smooth handoff.
