A system according to the principles of the present disclosure includes a temperature estimation module and a coolant flow control module. The temperature estimation module can determine an estimate of a heater core air out temperature of a vehicle based upon a heater core inlet coolant temperature, a heater core outlet coolant temperature, an estimated volumetric air flowrate, and an estimated volumetric coolant flowrate. The coolant flow control module can control a rate at which coolant flows to a heater core of the vehicle by adjusting a position of a coolant control valve of the vehicle or an output of a coolant pump of the vehicle. The coolant flow control module can control the coolant flowrate to decrease a difference between a target heater core air out temperature and the estimated heater core air out temperature.

A system includes a temperature error module and a coolant flow control module. The temperature error module determines an error between a target air temperature and a measured air temperature of a duct that supplies air to a cabin of a vehicle. The coolant flow control module controls a rate at which coolant flows to a heater core of the vehicle by adjusting at least one of a position of a coolant control valve of the vehicle and an output of an electric coolant pump of the vehicle. The coolant flow control module also controls the coolant flow rate to decrease the error between the target air temperature and the measured air temperature.

A thermal management system includes a coolant pump, high-voltage electric heater (HEH) for heating the coolant, a heater core, a blower directing air to the heater core, a cabin heater valve (CHV), sensors, and a controller. The CHV has an Engine Bypass position blocking coolant flow from the HEH into the engine, and an Engine Link position directing coolant from the HEH into the engine. In a method, the sensors measure engine outlet coolant temperature (ECT), inlet coolant temperature (ICT) to the HEH, inlet air temperature into the heater core, and outlet air temperature from the heater core. The controller calculates a target coolant temperature (TCT) value as a function of the air temperatures and mass flow rates, and controls the CHV via position control signals such that the CHV is switched between the Engine Link position and the Engine Bypass position when ICT equals the calculated TCT value.

Vehicles and methods for controlling climate control systems may include, but are not limited to at least one seat, a climate control system, and a controller communicatively coupled to the climate control system, wherein the controller is configured to calculate a directional sun effect for each of the at least one seats, and modify at least one of an airflow, a temperature and air distribution of the climate control system based upon the calculated directional sun effect for each of the at least one seats.
