A hydrophobic and/or oleophobic coating system for an ophthalmic lens having increased effective thickness and water contact angle. In one embodiment, the hydrophobic and/or oleophobic coating system comprises an anti-reflective coating applied to an ophthalmic lens, the anti-reflective coating comprising alternating layers of high and low index materials with an outer layer of silicon dioxide having exposed hydroxyl groups. A hydrophobic coating is applied to the anti-reflective coating, the hydrophobic coating comprising a silane with a hydrophobic group and fewer than three reactive groups capable of bonding to the exposed hydroxyl groups of the anti-reflective coating.

Anti-soiling coating for an ophthalmic lens

A thin film coating for an ophthalmic lens is provided, that comprises alternating layers of high and low index materials. The coating attenuates the transmission of light and has a spectral reflectance curve characterized by a reflectance of at least about 90% in a range from 320 nm to 420 nm, by 50% at 440 nm, by 5% or less at 460 nm, and wherein the spectral reflectance curve is monotonically or strictly decreasing between 420 nm to 460 nm.

Ophthalmic lens

A system is disclosed for measuring the transmission of light through a pair of eyeglasses having least one eyeglass lens mounted in a spectacle frame having a position of wear. The system comprises a light source, a support for mounting the eyeglasses, and a light detector coupled to the support. The support is configured to mount the eyeglasses with the position of wear relative to the light detector. A microprocessor is coupled to the light detector, and a display coupled to the processor. The processor receives spectral data from the light detector and outputs the spectral data to the display as a spectral curve.

System for measuring transmission of light through glasses

A hydrophobic and/or oleophobic coating system having a reversibly reduced hydrophobicity. A hydrophobic and/or oleophobic coating is applied to and is bonded or otherwise strongly adhered to a substrate, such as an optical lens. The coating has sufficient thickness to provide a weakly adhered, excess portion that is mechanically removable. The excess portion of the hydrophobic and/or oleophobic coating has a surface that is modified to reduce hydrophobicity, such as by ion bombardment. The hydrophobicity of the coating is restored by mechanical removal of the excess portion of the coating.
