A method performed by a computing system comprises receiving a first set of spatial information from an instrument positioned within an anatomic passageway. The first set of spatial information includes a plurality of spatial data records including position information for a distal end of the instrument at a plurality of time periods. The method further comprises ordering the plurality of spatial data records in a time-gathered order. The method further comprises evaluating a spatial relationship between first and second consecutive spatial data records of the plurality of spatial data records. The method further comprises filtering the first set of spatial information based upon the evaluated spatial relationship.

Systems and methods for navigation based on ordered sensor records

A system for performing an interventional procedure includes an interventional instrument and a control system. The control system includes a processor and a memory comprising machine-readable instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the control system to: receive a model of an anatomic structure, the anatomic structure including a plurality of passageways; identify a target structure in the model; identify a planned deployment location for positioning a distal tip of the interventional instrument to perform the interventional procedure on the target structure; determine whether an angle of approach of the distal tip relative to a passageway wall of a passageway of the plurality of passageways at the planned deployment location is acceptable; and navigate the interventional instrument, via computer control or based on user input, to perform the interventional procedure on the target structure.

Systems and methods for device-aware flexible tool registration

A system comprises a processor and a memory storing computer-readable instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the system to: define a subregion of a model of an anatomic region, the subregion including a plurality of virtual tissue structures and corresponding to an area surrounding a tip of an image capture probe located within the anatomic region; compare a tissue structure in an image received from the image capture probe to at least a portion of virtual tissue structures of the plurality of virtual tissue structures; based on the comparison, determine a respective similarity measure between the image and each virtual tissue structure; identify a closest matched virtual tissue structure based on the determined similarity measures; and based on identifying the closest matched virtual tissue structure, register the image to the model to determine a virtual position for the image capture probe with respect to the model.

Systems and methods for registration of multiple vision systems

A medical system includes an elongate instrument, a tracking system, and one or more processors. The tracking system is disposed along at least a portion of the elongate instrument. The one or more processors are coupled to the tracking system and are configured to: generate a plurality of linked bounded-surface elements corresponding to a set of connected passageways of a patient anatomy; receive shape information from the tracking system, the shape information indicating a shape of at least a portion of the elongate instrument when the portion is disposed in the set of connected passageways; register the shape information to the plurality of linked bounded-surface elements; and based on the registering, display a composite image including an instrument image of the elongate instrument displayed within a model of the set of connected passageways.

Systems and methods for registration of a medical device using a reduced search space

A non-transitory machine-readable media stores instructions that, when run by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to store a deformable model of a patient anatomy and deform the deformable model based on a measured deformation of a branched anatomical structure of the patient anatomy. The deformable model includes a skeleton tree of nodes and linkages representing the branched anatomical structure of the patient anatomy. Each of the nodes is located at a respective bifurcation of the branched anatomical structure, and at each respective bifurcation the corresponding linkages include an orientation. The deformable model is deformed by modifying the orientations of the linkages of the branched anatomical structure.

Systems and methods for non-rigid deformation of tissue for virtual navigation of interventional tools

A method and medical system for estimating the deformation of an anatomic structure that comprises generating a first model of at least one anatomical passageway from anatomical data describing a patient anatomy and determining a shape of a device positioned within the branched anatomical passageways. The method and medical system also comprise generating a second model of the plurality of branched anatomical passageways by adjusting the first model relative to the determined shape of the device.

Systems and methods for deformation compensation using shape sensing

A non-transitory machine-readable media storing instructions is provided. The instructions cause one or more processors to: define a subregion of a model of an anatomic region of a patient anatomy, the subregion corresponding to an area surrounding a tip of an image capture probe located within the anatomic region, the subregion including a plurality of virtual tissue structures—a set of virtual tissue structures of the plurality of virtual tissue structures is situated distally from the tip of the probe; compare a tissue structure in an image received from a camera positioned at the tip of the probe to a portion of the plurality of virtual tissue structures to identify a closest matched virtual tissue structure; and based on identification of the closest matched virtual tissue structure, register the image to the model to identify a virtual probe position for the tip of the probe with respect to the model.

A system for performing an interventional procedure includes an interventional instrument and a control system. The instrument includes a catheter and an interventional tool extendable from the catheter. The control system includes a processor and a memory comprising machine-readable instructions that cause the control system to: receive a model of an anatomic structure, the anatomic structure including a plurality of passageways; identify a target structure in the model; receive information about a maximum extension length the interventional tool can be extended relative to a distal tip of the catheter; based upon the received information about the maximum extension length, identify a planned deployment location for positioning the distal tip of the catheter to perform the interventional procedure on the target structure; determine a navigational path for the catheter to the target structure; and navigate the catheter to the identified planned deployment location via computer control or based on user input.
