An implementation is for a two-phase shutoff of a device having a sensor coupled to an integral shutoff system. One example includes a metering system with a sensor coupled to an integral shutoff system, wherein the sensor is used to perform a measurement which indicates that a first threshold has been met, a first response system configured to perform at least one action with respect to receiving the indication that the first threshold was met, the at least one action occurring while the integral shutoff system remains inactivated, a second response system configured to receive an indication from the metering system, wherein the sensor is used to perform a second measurement which indicates that a second threshold has been met, and a second response system configured to perform at least one additional action.

A utility meter includes a metrology core, a short-range radio configured to communicate wirelessly over a local area mesh network, a long-range radio configured to communicate wirelessly over a wide area network and a controller that checks a performance of the local area mesh network against one or more predetermined performance criteria. When the performance of the local area mesh network meets a set of one or more predetermined performance criteria, the utility meter communicates a first set of the information to the head-end system using the short-range radio. When the performance of the local area mesh network does not meet the set of one or more predetermined performance criteria, the utility meter communicates a second set of information to the head-end system using the long-range radio.

The new WirelessHART device can be then restarted. The WirelessHART network can be then disabled after provisioning is complete.

System and method of distinct duty cycle support for distinct multi-network protocol networks for industrial wireless sensor networks

Methods and systems for integrating communication devices into an industrial wireless system. A communications interface can be enabled on a field device access point from a user interface associated with a wireless device manager. The field device access point is configured to enable registers to read from different slave devices at different speeds and different data types. A proxy object can be implemented, which communicates with RTU (Remote Terminal Unit) devices and a cache can be implemented to store read data from different RTU slave. The read data is then periodically published to the wireless device manager through a wireless interface, thereby permitting the RTU devices or TCP devices to connect to the industrial wireless network using the field device access point.

A method for bandwidth management in a wireless network having wireless field devices (FDs) wirelessly coupled to a wireless access point associated to a wireless gateway. A first bandwidth usage percentage (BUP) consumed by the wireless access point and wireless router(s) is calculated from summed connected device weights. In response to a new FD or wireless router requesting to be connected to the network, a second BUP is calculated that would be consumed by the wireless access point and the wireless router(s) if the new FD or wireless router were connected to the wireless network. If the second BUP is not less than respective BUP thresholds, the new FD or router is prevented from being connected to the network. Disclosed bandwidth management can also be applied if an already connected FD in the network changes its path from one router or access point to another connected router or access point.

A method includes receiving data from multiple wireless field devices using multiple wireless communication protocols. The method also includes normalizing the data from the wireless field devices using one or more templates associated with the wireless field devices. The method further includes transmitting the normalized data in a unified format. The method could also include generating the one or more templates using device description (DD) files associated with the wireless field devices. Each template may provide, for one wireless field device or type of wireless field device, (i) an indication of a type of data provided by the wireless field device or type of wireless field device, (ii) a range of data provided by the wireless field device or type of wireless field device, and (iii) how to normalize data from the wireless field device or type of wireless field device into the unified format.

Apparatus and method for providing a common interface for multiple wireless communication protocols

Methods and systems are disclosed herein for accurately calculating battery consumption in a wireless field device. The total current consumed by a radio board associated with a wireless field device can be determined based on the sum of the current consumed as a result of particular events occurring at the radio board. The current consumed by a sensor board of the wireless field device can then be averated with respect to particular type of sensor. The current consumed by the radio board and the current consumed by the sensor board in the wireless field device can be combined to calculate a predictive value indicative of a remaining life of a battery associated with the wireless field device.
