A computing device includes a first portion and a second portion rotatable relative to each other about a hinge. A bumper is located between the hinge and the first portion. The bumper includes an impact resistant material. The impact resistant material absorbs some or all of the force from an impact between a hinge body and the first portion.

Examples are disclosed relating to computing devices and methods for determining angular orientations of a first planar substrate rotatably coupled to a second planar substrate. In one example, a method comprises: receiving at a three-axis magnetic sensor in the second substrate a magnetic field emanating from a magnet array in the first substrate; determining magnetic flux densities at first and second sensing axes of the sensor throughout a range of degrees; and using the magnetic flux densities to determine multiple angular orientations of the first substrate relative to the second planar substrate.

Rotatably coupled touch screen displays

Mobile computing devices often incorporate a window along a discrete portion of a perimeter of a metallic device case adjacent the antennae and a plastic cover that covers the window and seals antennae within the mobile computing device. As mobile computing devices shrink in physical size and weight and become more portable, available space within the mobile computing devices for the antennae shrinks. Merely increasing the size of the connectivity window to occupy up to a full width or length of the perimeter of the metallic device case may negatively impact overall device stiffness requirements. The electrically isolated corner stiffeners described herein may permit larger antennae windows for wireless connectivity, while meeting applicable stiffness requirements for an associated mobile computing device.

A high strength hinge mechanism is described herein. In one or more implementations, a computing device includes a display portion which includes a display device, and a base portion which includes a keyboard. A hinge mechanism is attached to the display portion and the base portion to enable rotation of the display portion relative to the base portion. The hinge mechanism includes a friction element and a cylindrical shaft secured to the friction element and to a chassis of the display portion. The friction element is configured to apply friction to the shaft in a radial direction as the shaft is rotated. The rotation of the shaft enables the display portion to be rotated from a closed position to a fully-open position. The hinge mechanism also includes a frame structure to support the friction element and the shaft.
