A turbocharged engine ('&#x2033;) counteracts plugging of a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) by causing a first portion of exhaust from one or more exhaust manifolds () to enter the DOC after having passed through the turbocharger (), and causing a second portion of the exhaust (HEG) to enter the DOC without passing through the turbocharger.

Engine and method for counteracting face plugging of a diesel oxidation catalyst

An engine control system ( ) of a diesel engine ( ) that powers a motor vehicle processes data in execution of a strategy (FIG. ) to provide control of both timing and duration of forced regeneration of a diesel particulate filter ( ). The overall strategy is a hybrid of model-based and closed-loop control strategies. Redundant elements of the strategy (FIG. ) determine when forced regeneration is called for. Forced regeneration is initiated by retarding the timing of the start of main fuel injection ( ). Fueling is then adjusted ( ) both to enhance catalytic action and to make the process transparent to a driver of the vehicle.

Forced regeneration of a diesel particulate filter

A hydraulically-assisted engine valve actuator for assisting in the actuation of an engine valve, includes a servo piston being operably coupled to the engine valve. A translatable pilot valve is in fluid communication with the servo piston and the main piston and is operably coupled to and controlled by a pilot valve positioning system. The pilot valve positioning system controls a translational stroke of the pilot valve to meter hydraulic fluid under pressure to and from the servo piston. A stroke magnifier magnifies a stroke of the pilot valve positioning system.
