A method of encoding a set of information bits to produce a codeword that encodes the set of information bits for reliable communication is provided. The set of information bits is received. The set of information bits are provided to a plurality of permutation layers separated by neural network processing layers. Each permutation layer accepts an input vector and generates a reordered output vector that is a reordering of the input vector. Each neural network processing layer accepts a vector of input values and generates a vector of output values based on a non-linear function of the vector of input values. The reordered output vector of a final permutation layer of the plurality of permutation layers is provided as the codeword. In some embodiments, a corresponding method of decoding a codeword to retrieve a set of information bits is provided.

Non-linear encoding and decoding for reliable wireless communication

Determining data availability is disclosed, including: performing a data availability challenge with respect to a claimer node to determine whether the claimer node stores at least some elements included in a base layer in a digital tree corresponding to a data entity; and publishing a first set of elements associated with the base layer of the digital tree and the data availability challenge. Furthermore, encoding auditing is disclosed, including: obtaining a first set of elements associated with a base layer of a digital tree corresponding to a data entity; and generating an encoding validity determination of the digital tree based at least in part on whether the first set of elements is usable to recover a second set of elements associated with the base layer of the digital tree.

Determining data availability

Verifying a set of remotely stored data is disclosed, including: requesting a first element corresponding to a first leaf in a base layer of a digital tree, wherein the digital tree corresponds to a set of remotely stored data; receiving the first element corresponding to the first leaf; and receiving a membership proof comprising a set of elements from one or more layers higher in the digital tree than the base layer of the digital tree, wherein the set of elements comprises a path from the first leaf to a root of the digital tree, wherein the set of elements is dependent on a plurality of additional leaves and wherein verification of the first element corresponding to the first leaf increases a level of confidence in an availability of the plurality of additional leaves.

Verifying a set of remotely stored data

Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate identifying devices in a wireless network and cognitively communicating with devices over utilized frequencies. Devices can be identified by receiving downlink resource assignments related to the devices, evaluating uplink transmissions thereover, and identifying the devices from one or more aspects of the uplink transmissions (e.g., an identifier in the transmission). Moreover, the uplink transmissions can be re-transmitted to a serving device to provide relay functionality for the transmissions. Additionally, peer-to-peer communication with the device and/or other devices can be facilitated by using a portion of available transmission power to re-transmit while using the other portion to transmit peer-to-peer communications. Thus, interference caused by the peer-to-peer communications is mitigated by additionally functioning as a relay using a portion of the transmit power.

Peer-to-peer device identification and cognitive communication

Methods and apparatus for determining a portion of a channel, e.g., a peer discovery channel, to use in a communications network, e.g., an ad hoc peer to peer network, are described. In the communication network, the channel includes a recurring set of time/frequency resources. A device monitors the congestion level and decides to use a whole channel or a fraction of a channel (e.g., &#xbd;. &#xbc;) as a function of the congestion level. The device may change the fraction of the channel it occupies as the congestion level changes. The device broadcasts control information indicating the fraction of the channel it occupies. The device may be a mobile wireless terminal.

Methods and apparatus for controlling channel utilization

To improve operation in a wireless communication system, a relay can be used to assist in transferring information from a mobile device to a base station. Uplink and downlink communications can be monitored to determine if a mobile device is at an edge of a cell and if there should be assistance provided. If there should be assistance performed, then digital or analog relay operations can be implemented. Multiple packet transmissions can take place as well as a scaled version of a transmission can be transferred.

Wireless communication information relay

Techniques for selecting a serving base station for a terminal by taking into account backhaul capability are described. The terminal may be within the coverage of multiple base stations, which may be of different types and may have different backhaul capabilities. One of the base stations may be selected as a serving base station for the terminal based on the backhaul capabilities of these base stations. The serving base station may also be selected based on additional criteria such as data or delay requirements of the terminal, transmit power capability of the terminal, characteristics of data for the terminal, etc.

A system and method for power control in distributed networks is provided. A method for transmitting information includes setting a transmit power level for a subset of communications controllers in a communications network, and transmitting information to a communications device served by a communications controller. The subset of communications controllers includes ad hoc communications controllers in the communications network, and the setting of the transmit power level is performed in a distributed manner. The information is transmitted at a transmit power level set for the communications controller.

System and method for power control in distributed networks

Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate use of power and phase coherence to multiplex or manage interference in a wireless communication environment. In accordance with various aspects set forth herein, systems and/or methods are provided that receive a spectrum of tones that include additional data, ascertain whether or not tone intensities of received tones included in the spectrum of tones exceeds a threshold, based on whether or not the tone intensities of the received tones exceed the threshold, decode information included in the received tones to extract the additional data, and thereafter decode information included in one or more remaining tones that fail to exceed the threshold in order to extract primary data.

Flash position signaling: multiplexing and interference management

Aspects relate to interference management in a multiple-input-multiple-output peer-to-peer network utilizing connection scheduling. When channel side information is available at both transmitter and receiver, both devices determine transmit/receiver beamforming vectors. Transmitter sends a first transmission request signal with first transmit beamforming vector and a second transmission request signal with second transmit beamforming vector in a transmission request block. Receiver estimates SINRs of the MIMO channels associated with the receive beamforming vectors and determines whether to return request response signals. Based on received request response signals, transmitter decides to transmit streams of data using the corresponding transmit beamforming vectors in the data burst. When channel side information is available only at receiver, transmitter sends one transmission request signal. Receiver estimates the SINRs of the MIMO channels associated with receive beamforming vectors using MMSE and/or successive interference cancellation (SIC), and returns request response signals in the request response block.

Interference management with MIMO in a peer-to-peer network

Aspects describe different multiple antenna techniques that can be utilized in a peer-to-peer network based on a network congestion level. A MIMO scheme where a transmitter sends to a receiver multiple spatial streams at substantially the same time in the same traffic segment can be utilized when network congestion level is low. A receiver beam forming scheme where transmitter sends a single stream in a traffic segment and receiver uses multiple receive antennas to maximize signal to noise ratio can be utilized when network congestion level is high. The connection pair (transmitter and receiver) occupy more control resources in the MIMO scheme than the receiver beam forming scheme. The decision related to which technique to utilize can be made at about the same time as a communication is initiated. Further, if network conditions change during a communication, the antenna technique that is utilized can be switched to a different technique during the communication exchange.

Switching between MIMO and receiver beam forming in a peer-to-peer network

Methods and apparatus for communicating information, e.g., peer discovery information, to peer communications devices using multiple antenna patterns at different times are described. One exemplary method includes transmitting first peer discovery information during a first period of time using a first antenna pattern, and transmitting second peer discovery information during a second period of time using a second antenna pattern which is different from the first antenna pattern. In at least some embodiments the first antenna pattern is a beam antenna pattern and the second antenna pattern is an omni-directional antenna pattern. In some embodiments, an omni-directional antenna pattern is used at least 50% of the time. This allows devices near the transmitting device to quickly obtain peer discovery information while devices further away make take longer to obtain the peer discovery information since they may need for a beam pattern facing their direction to be used.

Communications methods and apparatus for supporting communications with peers using multiple antenna patterns

Methods and apparatus for scheduling mobile stations (MSs) to download data to and/or to control the rate of downloading to an MS from a base station (BS) as a function of downlink channel condition information are described. Artificial channel variations, which can be measured at the MS, and feedback to a BS for scheduling purposes, are introduced through the use of two or more transmitter antennas at a BS. Each of the antennas transmits a signal at the same frequency having the same information content, e.g., modulated data. However the signals are made to differ with time in their phase and/or amplitude. Multiple signals having the same transmission frequency and information content are received and interpreted as a single composite signal by a receiving MS.
