A glass container and a process for forming an inorganic silica coating on an exterior surface of the glass container to improve one or more surface characteristics of the glass container. A sol-gel solution including a polysilazane and an organic solvent is applied to the exterior surface of the glass container to form a sol-gel coating thereon. The glass container and the sol-gel coating are then exposed to a water vapor-containing environment and heated at a temperature of between 150 degrees Celsius and 600 degrees Celsius to transform the sol-gel coating into an inorganic silica coating. The as-formed silica coating has a hardness of greater than 8.5 GPa and is bonded to the exterior surface of the glass container through a plurality of siloxane bonds.

Polysilazane-derived coating for glass containers

A glass container and related methods of manufacturing and coating glass containers. An exterior glass surface of a glass container is coated with a hybrid sol-gel and heated to cross-link the hybrid sol-gel. The resulting cross-linked hybrid sol-gel coating on the exterior glass surface of the glass container has greater than 90% silicate-based material by weight.

Glass batch materials and processes for preparing and melting structured pellets of glass batch materials to produce molten glass. A structured pellet of glass batch materials may include a core and a shell surrounding the core. The core may include a mixture of glass-forming materials and the shell may include a thermally-activated material. The thermally-activated material may be formulated to undergo an exothermic chemical reaction when heated to a temperature at or above a threshold temperature such that heat is transferred from the shell to the mixture of glass-forming materials in the core.

Antireflective coating for glass containers

A glass container and related methods of manufacturing a glass container. A solution having a composition including a silane, a solvent, a catalyst, and water, is applied to an exterior glass surface of the glass container, at an application temperature between 5 and 40 degrees Celsius, such that the solution at least partially fills the surface imperfections to provide a room-temperature-curable cold-end coating on the glass container. Then, the applied solution is allowed to cure on the exterior glass surface of the glass container, at a curing temperature between 5 and 40 degrees Celsius.

Strengthening glass containers

A method of inspecting a glass article using nuclear magnetic resonance imaging (NMRI). An NMRI-active filler material may be applied to the interior surface, the exterior surface, or both of the container. The excess material then may be removed leaving the filler within one or more anomalies on the surface of the container. And an NMRI analysis may be performed producing images associated with the anomalies having filler material therein.

Coatings for enhancing glass strength

A glass container and a process for chemically modifying a surface portion of a glass container using an ion-exchange process. At least a portion of the glass container is immersed in or in contact with an aqueous electrolyte solution comprising salts of at least one group IA alkali metal and having a temperature of about 75 degrees Celsius such that exchangeable alkali metal ions in a surface portion of the glass container are exchanged or replaced by alkali metal ions in the electrolyte solution. The alkali metal ions that replace the exchangeable ions in the surface portion of the glass container have either a smaller or a larger atomic radius than the exchangeable ions.

Surface treatment process for glass containers

A glass container and a process for forming a graphene-containing coating on an exterior surface of the glass container to increase the strength of the glass container. A liquid coating composition that includes a physical mixture of a graphene material and a siloxane polymer is applied to the exterior surface of the glass container to form a precursor coating thereon. The glass container and the precursor coating are then cured to form a composite thin film of silica (SiO) and graphene on the exterior surface of the glass container.

Substrates comprising such coatings are also disclosed.

Methods for preparing silver colloids and silica-coated silver colloids are disclosed. The silver colloids may be prepared by heating a silver-containing solution, combining the heated silver-containing solution with an acid solution, and cooling the combined solutions to form a silver colloid containing silver particles. The silver particles in the silver colloid can further be coated with silica. A method for preparing antimicrobial coatings is also disclosed.

Certain example embodiments of this invention relate to coated articles that include anti-reflective (AR) coatings produced from colloidal silica with variable size particles in formulation, and/or methods of making the same. In certain example embodiments, the AR coatings advantageously exhibit high transmission, high transmission gain with respect to uncoated articles, and high b* values, before and/or after heat treatment. The AR coatings of certain example embodiments may be temperable or otherwise heat treatable (e.g., at temperatures of 500 degrees C. or greater) together with their supporting substrates. In certain example embodiments, the particle size for the colloidal silica is 10-110 nm, and the b* values are at least about 0.8. Certain example embodiments may be used in connection with photovoltaic devices and/or the like.
