Perpendicular magnetic recording media including a carbon grain isolation initiation layer for reducing intergranular exchange coupling in the recording layer are provided. In one such case, the media includes a substrate, a plurality of underlayers on the substrate, a grain isolation initiation layer (GIIL) on the plurality of underlayers, the GIIL including C, a metal, and an oxide, and a magnetic recording layer directly on the GIIL and including a non-ordered structure. In another case, a method of fabricating such magnetic media is provided.

Systems and methods for shaping leads of electronic lapping guides to reduce calibration error are provided. One such system includes a device configured to generate predictable resistance for leads of an electronic lapping guide, the device including a lapping surface, and an ELG configured to provide information indicative of a degree of lapping performed on the lapping surface, the ELG including a first electrical lead, a second electrical lead spaced apart from the first electrical lead, and a resistive element between the first electrical lead and the second electrical lead, the resistive element including a right segment, a left segment, and a middle segment that abuts each of the right segment and the left segment, where the right segment is spaced apart from the left segment and the middle segment is adjacent to the lapping surface, where the first and second electrical leads are recessed from the middle segment.

Systems and methods for shaping leads of electronic lapping guides to reduce calibration error

The present disclosure generally relates to a PMR media for use in a HDD. The PMR media has an amorphous ferri-magnetic material layer disposed within the capping structure. The amorphous ferri-magnetic material layer reduces the noise. The amorphous ferri-magnetic material layer may be disposed between capping layer or on top of the capping layers. Additionally, the amorphous ferri-magnetic material layer may contain Tb.

TbFeCo in PMR media for SNR improvement

A method comprises providing a magnetic element including a free layer, a pinned layer, a nonmagnetic spacer layer between the free and pinned layers, and a pinning layer adjacent the pinned layer. The free layer is biased in a first direction. The pinned layer has a first layer having a first magnetization, a second layer having a second magnetization, and a nonmagnetic layer between the first and second layer. The first magnetization is pinned parallel to a second direction substantially perpendicular to the first direction and substantially perpendicular to the ABS. The second magnetization is antiparallel to the second direction. The pinning layer is oriented along the second direction. The method further comprises providing a hard bias structure having a hard bias magnetization, initializing the hard bias magnetization along the second direction, performing at least one thermal treatment, and resetting the hard bias magnetization substantially along the first direction.

Method and system for fabricating magnetic transducers with improved pinning

A method for fabricating a piezoelectric multilayer are described. The method includes providing conductive layers. Alternating conductive layers are electrically connected. A first plurality of alternating conductive layers is electrically isolated from a second plurality of alternating conductive layers. Piezoelectric layers are interleaved with the conductive layers. Apertures are provided in the piezoelectric layers. A first conductive plug electrically connects the first plurality of alternating conductive layers, includes a first plurality of segments, and is in apertures in the piezoelectric layers. Each of the first plurality of segments extends through one of the piezoelectric layers. A second conductive plug electrically connects the second plurality of alternating conductive layers, includes a second plurality of segments, and is in a second portion of the plurality of apertures. Each of the second plurality of segments extends through one of the plurality of piezoelectric layers.

Method for providing a piezoelectric multilayer

A method and system for providing a magnetic transducer are disclosed. The method and system include providing a magnetic element including a free layer, a nonmagnetic spacer layer, a pinned layer, and a pinning layer adjacent to the pinned layer. The free layer is to be biased in a first direction. The pinning layer biases the pinned layer magnetization in a second direction. The pinning layer is oriented along the second direction. A hard bias structure is adjacent to the magnetic element. The hard bias structure magnetization is initialized such that it has a nonzero component along the second direction. The method and system also include performing thermal treatment(s) after initializing the hard bias magnetization. The thermal treatment(s) are above room temperature. The method and system further include resetting the hard bias magnetization substantially along the first direction after the thermal process(es) are performed.
