Test apparatus and methods for impact testing specimens, including edge impact testing are disclosed. The apparatus and methods disclosed include a pendulum and a bob which are used to impact test specimens against an impacting object.

A cover element for a foldable electronic device that includes a foldable glass element, first and second primary surfaces, and a compressive stress region extending from the first primary surface to a first depth that is defined by a stress &#x3c3;of at least about 100 MPa in compression at the first primary surface. The device also includes a polymeric layer disposed over the first primary surface. The glass element has a stress profile such that when the glass element is bent to a target bend radius of from 1 mm to 20 mm, to induce a bending stress &#x3c3;at the first primary surface in tension, &#x3c3;+&#x3c3;&#x3c;400 MPa (in tension). Further, the cover element can withstand a pen drop height of at least 1.5 times that of a control pen drop height of the cover element without the layer according to a Drop Test 1.

Foldable electronic device assemblies and cover elements for the same

Apparatus and methods of for measuring stress incurred by a cover glass of a handheld device when the cover glass contacts a surface during a drop event. A transparent solid piece of material with a drop surface and a back surface is provided and oriented to receive a dropped handheld device so that the cover glass contacts the drop surface. At least two optical detectors are directed at the back surface of the transparent material to obtain image data including a plurality of pixel points.

Provided herein are ion-implanted glass based articles with improved flaw suppression properties. The ion-implanted glass based articles generally have a final indent fracture threshold (IFT) load of at least 650 grams, and/or a scratch threshold force of at least 10 N, which represents at least 1.25-fold enhancement compared to the glass based article prior to ion-implantation. Factors affecting the efficacy of the ion implantation process can include the IFT load of the starting glass or glass ceramic substrate (native IFT load), ion type, ion dose, implant energy, beam current, and glass temperature.

UV-curable coating compositions are provided including (in weight %) 5-50% cycloaliphatic crosslinker of the formula wherein R is wherein X is a Cstraight chain, 20-55% of a summed amount of an oxetane crosslinker and an epoxy diluent, 35-45% epoxy functionalized silicon nanoparticles, 1-5% epoxy silane adhesion promoter and 0.5-2% photoinitiator.

A novel ceramic-ceramic composite of a uniform dispersion of silicon carbide fibers in a matrix of MgO.multidot.nAl.sub.2 O.sub.3 wherein n ranges from about 1 to about 4.5, said composite comprising by volume from 1 to 50% silicon carbide fibers and from 99 to 50% MgO.multidot.nAl.sub.2 O.sub.3. The composite is readily fabricated by forming a powder comprising a uniform dispersion of silicon carbide fibers in poorly crystalline phase comprising MgO and Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 in a mole ratio of n and either (a) hot pressing or preferably (b) cold pressing to form a preform and then forging utilizing a temperature in the range of 1100.degree. C. to 1900.degree. C. and a strain rate ranging from about 10.sup.-5 seconds .sup.-1 to about 1 seconds .sup.-1 so that surfaces cracks do not appear to obtain a shear deformation greater than 30%.

The invention relates to producing relatively flaw free zirconia ceramic shapes requiring little or no matching by superplastic forging of a fully sintered or partially sintered preform. The preform is prepared by providing a starting powder comprising by weight from about 70% to about 100% zirconia and from about 0 to about 30% of stabilizing additives, e.g. commerically available TZ-3Y powder, cold pressing to obtain a preform of green density ranging from about 30% of theoretical density to about 75% of theoretical density and partially or fully sintering at atmospheric pressure, e.g. in argon or air at a temperature ranging from about 900.degree. C. to about 1900.degree. C. The superplastic forging is carried out by isothermally pressing the partially or fully sintered preform into substantially final shape utilizing a temperature and strain rate such that surface cracks do not occur, e.g. utilizing a temperature of 1310.degree. C., a substantially constant displacement rate based on an initial strain rate of 7.times.10.sup.-3 seconds .sup.-1 and open die or closed die processing in a graphite or metal die.
