The method may include sending the write request to the virtual machine disk and receiving a write completion message from the virtual machine disk. The method may also include sending, in response to the write completion message, the write request to an I/O daemon, and queueing the write request in an I/O daemon queue. The method may further include sending the write completion message to the guest virtual machine, and sending the write request to a backup gateway such that the backup gateway mimics writes to the virtual machine disk. The global block change bitmap may indicate which data blocks of the files have been changed. Performing a respective backup operation for a respective backup policy may include backing up only the data blocks that have changed in the files listed in the respective policy-specific file change log since a previous backup operation for the respective backup policy was performed. The data blocks that have changed may be specified in a respective policy-specific block change bitmap for the respective backup policy.

A method, system, and computer-readable storage medium for providing an adaptive tap for a virtual machine protection are disclosed. In one embodiment, an Input/Output (I/O) write is received from one of virtual machines. The virtual machines are executed on a server, and each virtual machine is configured to generate I/O writes to a VMFS file system on a primary storage. The I/O write includes data and an offset at which the data is to be stored in the VMFS file system. The server, and primary and secondary storage are coupled to a network. A virtual machine indicator is determined using the offset. A secondary write to a secondary storage is generated based on the I/O write. The secondary write includes the data and the VM indicator associated with the I/O write. The secondary storage is then accessed to write/store the secondary write.

Adaptive tap for full virtual machine protection

Described herein is technology for, among other things root image caching and indexing for block-level distributed application management. The technology involves storing blocks of a root image on a first storage unit and storing blocks of leaf images on respective second storage units. The leaf images include additional data blocks not previously contained in the root image and changes made by respective compute nodes to the blocks of the root image. The technology includes caching blocks of the root image that have been accessed by at least one compute node. Described herein is technology for, among other things virus scanning for block-level distributed application management. The technology involves storing blocks of a root image on a first storage unit and storing blocks of leaf images on respective second storage units. An embodiment of the present invention is directed to a system for distributing an application environment to a compute node. The system includes a first storage unit for storing blocks of a root image of the compute node and a second storage unit for storing a leaf image comprising new data blocks and changes to the blocks of the root image. The system further includes a union block device for interfacing between the compute node and the first and second storage units to distribute the application environment to the compute node. The union block device creates the application environment by merging the blocks of the root image stored on the first storage unit with the leaf image stored on the second storage unit.
