A cognitive commuter assistant may provide alerts regarding sensitive conversation topics and smart excuse route suggestions. The cognitive commuter assistant may store user preferences and historical data related to past conversations between passengers and navigators. The cognitive commuter assistant may identify current location and destinations, and may further identify local information, such as news and cultural information, based on the current location and destination. The cognitive commuter assistant may monitor and analyze the conversation between a passenger and navigator to determine a first route to the destination. The cognitive commuter assistant may generate, based on user preferences, local information, the first route, and historical data, alternative route suggestions.

One embodiment provides a method, including: obtaining historical information for equipment having at least one control, wherein the historical information indicates a setting for the at least one control during operation of the equipment and identifies operating performance of the equipment corresponding to the indicated setting; receiving a goal for the equipment, wherein the goal is related to a desired operating performance of the equipment; identifying, a plurality of sets of contiguous good reference segments, wherein a contiguous set of good reference segments comprises a plurality of operating time segments where the desired operating performance goal was achieved for a predetermined of time; identifying, a subset of sets comprising reference segments that are achievable from a current operating state of the equipment; selecting, a reference segment that is attainable based upon exogenous factors related to an operating environment of the equipment; and providing a recommendation to an operator of the equipment.

Identifying equipment operating control settings using historical information

A system for dispatching vehicles in a public transportation network may include a passenger monitoring system configured to monitor a number of passengers waiting at a stop in the transportation network, a vehicle dispatching system and a processing device. The processing device may apply a Markov Decision Process (MDP) model to determine a score for each of multiple decision rules, in which each score represents a number of passengers waiting at the stop at the end of a time interval, and use the scores to identify a number of waiting passengers at which a reserve vehicle should be dispatched. The system may use information received from the passenger monitoring system to determine a state at an instant of time, and determine whether a reserve vehicle should be dispatched based on the MDP model and cause the vehicle dispatch system to dispatch a reserve vehicle or retain a nominal vehicle.
