The present disclosure is directed towards an engine assembly comprising a crankcase, a crankshaft, a lubrication system and fluid guide arrangement. During rotation the crankshaft is configured to drive a crankcase fluid flow in a crankcase chamber. The lubrication system comprises a lubricant drain for a drain fluid flow therethrough extending to a drain aperture at the crankcase chamber. The fluid guide arrangement is located adjacent or in proximity to the drain aperture. The fluid guide arrangement is configured for guiding crankcase fluid flow away from the drain aperture and/or for reducing the pressure of the crankcase fluid flow past the drain aperture, such that drain fluid flows from the lubricant drain.

Engine assembly

A method of monitoring a turbocharger system makes use of vibrational behaviour to predict potential future failure modes. Changes in sub-synchronous vibrational behaviour of the turbocharger assembly may be used to distinguish between failure modes such as wear and coking. Rate of change of sub-synchronous vibrational behaviour may be used to predict time before likely failure. Also disclosed is a turbocharger system configured to perform the method.

Method and apparatus for predicting turbocharger failure modes

The high pressure compressor wheel of a two stage turbocharger assembly is cooled by charge air bled from the charge air flowpath downstream of the aftercooler. A wastegate may be arranged across the high pressure stage and operated by an actuator which in turn is operable by the static or dynamic pressure of the charge air in the cooling flowpath. The cooling airflow may be blocked to open the wastegate and released or resumed to close the wastegate so that cooling air is supplied only while the high pressure compressor wheel is under load.

Two stage turbocharger with cooling arrangement

A turbocharger housing for an engine includes a specifically designed mounting interface provided at a turbine outlet of a turbine housing. In particular, the mounting interface includes a mounting flange that is inclined with respect to a plane that is orthogonal to the longitudinal direction of the turbocharger. In particular, in case of an arrangement where the turbocharger is arranged such that the shaft of the same extends substantially horizontally, the mounting flange of the turbine outlet is rotated by a predetermined angle of, for example, 20 degrees about the vertical axis.

Turbocharger housing

A turbomachine with a shaft supporting a turbine wheel is supported for rotation in a housing. The shaft extends through a bore in the housing and a bearing assembly is disposed in the bore. The turbomachine has a first lubricating fluid slinger comprising a screw thread that is engageable with a threaded section of the shaft such that the first lubricating fluid slinger is screwable along the threaded section of the shaft so as to apply a compressive preload to the bearing assembly.

Turbomachine bearing assembly preloading arrangement

An assembly including a first turbocharger, the first turbocharger including a first turbine and a first compressor, the first turbine arranged in a turbine flowpath to be driven in rotation by an exhaust gas flowing at a variable flow rate through the turbine flowpath. The first compressor arranged in a compressor flowpath to be driven by the first turbine to urge an intake gas to flow through the compressor flowpath. The first turbine and first compressor being supported for rotation in bearings supplied via an oil flowpath at an oil pressure. The assembly further including a seal arranged between the oil flowpath and the compressor flowpath to resist leakage of the oil into the compressor flowpath and a flow control means configured to control a rotational speed of the first turbine and first compressor by controlling the flow of exhaust gas in the turbine flowpath.

Turbocharger assembly with oil carry-over protection

A turbomachine with a rotary shaft supporting a turbine wheel is supported for rotation in a housing. The shaft extends through a bore in the housing and a bearing assembly being disposed in the bore. At least one end of the shaft has a primary seal and a secondary seal. The primary seal comprises a non-contact seal defined by an annular clearance between a first non-rotating seal element and a second seal element that rotates with the shaft. The primary seal is arranged to receive lubricating oil from the bearing assembly. An oil slinging feature is provided between the primary and secondary seals.
