Compounds exhibiting high hole mobility and/or high glass transition temperatures are provided which are of the formula [Ar][Ar]wherein: Certain of the compounds may be used in electron transport layers and may be doped with p-type dopants. They may be incorporated into OLEDs, organic photovoltaic devices, imaging members and thin film transistors. In further embodiments there are provided OLEDs or other devices e.g. electrostatic latent image forming members in which improved efficiency is obtained by using as electron transport layers, electron injectors, hosts and emitters (dopants) ambipolar or electron-transmitting compounds in which thianthrene is bonded to aryl e.g. 1-anthracenyl-9-yl-thianthrene, 1-biphenyl-4-yl-thianthrene and 9,10-Bis(1-thianthrenyl) anthracene.

Heterocyclic compounds and their use in electro-optical or opto-electronic devices

In OLEDs, improved efficiency is obtained by compounds which can form inter alia electron injection layers of the formula (I) 

Electroluminescent device using azomethine-lithium-complex as electron injection layer

Electroluminescent devices are disclosed comprising a transparent anode; a layer of a hole transporting material; a layer of an electroluminescent material; a layer of an electron transporting material; a layer of a substituted lithium quinolate; and a metal cathode. The electroluminescent device may be an organic light-emitting diode having a cathode, an electron injection layer in contact with the cathode and an electron transport layer in contact with the electron injection layer and comprising aluminum, zirconium or hafnium quinolate or a mixture thereof or a mixture of any of them with a quinolate of a metal of group 1, 2, 3, 13 or 14 of the periodic table. Such devices may be made by the steps of forming a substituted lithium quinolate having one or more substituents and depositing the substituted lithium quinolate on a cathode of the device to provide an electron injection layer.

The invention provides new compounds of the formula I, II or III. These compounds can be used as electron transport materials in optical light emitting diodes (OLEDs). The compounds of the formula I, II and III are as follows: 

Compounds having electron transport properties, their preparation and use

In OLEDs, improved efficiency is obtained by using compounds of formula [Ar](CH&#x2550;CH&#x2014;R)wherein n is an integer from 1 to 4; [Ar] is a polycyclic aromatic or heteroaromatic scaffold optionally substituted with one or more alkyl or alkoxy groups; and Ris a 5-membered heteroaryl group optionally substituted with methyl, methoxy, aryl or heteroaryl, or is phenyl or naphthyl optionally substituted with methyl, methoxy, trifluoromethyl or cyano or is biphenyl or substituted biphenyl. The compounds are believed to be novel and can be made by condensing a compound of formula wherein [Ar] and n are as defined above with a compound of formula [Ar](CH3)RCHO in the presence of an acid catalyst e.g. an anhydride of an organic acid.

Phenanthroline compounds and electroluminescent devices using the same

A compound of the formula R(CR&#x2550;CR)nAr(CR&#x2550;CR)Rwherein: n is 0 or 1; Ar represents aryl or heteroaryl having 1-5 aromatic rings which may be chain or fused or a combination of chain and fused, which may be substituted with alkoxy, fluoro, fluoroalkyl or cyano and which in the case of a 5-membered ring nitrogen heteroatom may be N-substituted with aryl or substituted aryl optionally further substituted with alkoxy, fluoro, fluoroalkyl or cyano; Rand Rindependently represent aryl or nitrogen, oxygen or sulphur-containing heteroaryl having two to four fused aromatic rings one of which may be 5-membered and optionally substituted by aryl or heteroaryl having 1-5 chain or fused aromatic rings which may be further substituted with alkoxy, fluoro, fluoroalkyl or cyano; and Rand Rindependently represent hydrogen, methyl, ethyl or benzyl.

Compounds having electroluminescent or electron transport properties

The present invention relates to heteroleptic electroluminescent metal complexes and to their preparation and use in electroluminescent devices, particularly to electroluminescent compounds having the general chemical formula: 

Electroluminescent materials and devices

Novel ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium or platinum complexes of dibenzothiophene ligands are electroluminescent compounds.

Electroluminescent devices have an electroluminescent layer incorporating iridium complexes with 2-benzo[b]thiophenyl and benzimidazole ligands such as bis[thiophen-2-yl-pyridine-C,N']-2-(2-pyridyl)-benzimidazole iridium.

An electroluminescent composition is provided comprising: (a) a compound of the general chemical formula (I): wherein M is lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, caesium, beryllium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium, copper, silver, gold, zinc, boron, aluminum, gallium, indium, germanium, tin, antimony, lead, manganese, iron, ruthenium, osmium, cobalt, rhodium, iridium, nickel, palladium, platinum, cadmium or chromium; n is the valence of M; and R, Rand Rcan be the same or different, and are selected from hydrogen, a substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic group, a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic, heterocyclic or polycyclic ring structure, a fluorocarbon, a halogen or a nitrile group; and (b) a suitable dopant. The composition may be used in forming electroluminescent devices.

An improved electroluminescent device has a layer of a first electroluminescent metal complex or organo metallic complex and a layer of a second metal complex or organo metallic complex in which the band gap of the metal in the second electroluminescent metal complex or organo metallic complex is larger than the band gap of the metal in the first electroluminescent metal complex or organo metallic complex.

A method producing authenticatable documents by incorporating a fluorescent organometallic complex in the toner or in the paper in which the fluorescent organometallic complex gives off light with a characteristic spectrum when exposed to UV light.

Document authentification

An electroluminescent material is a metal complex of 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-trimethylacetyl-pyrazol-5-one of formula (I). An electroluminescent device comprising the compound of formula (I) in the luminescent layer is also part of the invention. 

Novel ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium or platinum complexes of thianthrene ligands are electroluminescent compounds. According to the invention there is provided complexes of Formula (I).
