An epoxy ester resin which results from reacting (a) an epoxy resin, (b) a dimerized fatty acid and (c) a monocarboxylic acid. The epoxy ester resins are useful in coating compositions.

Advanced resins and unadvanced epoxy resins are disclosed wherein the unadvanced compound and at least a portion of the advanced epoxy resin contains at least one --O--R.sup.1 --O-- or --(O--CH.sub.2 --CHR.sup.2).sub.n --O -- group as a bridge between two groups selected independently from the group consisting of (1) a saturated or unsaturated cycloaliphatic group, (2) an aromatic group, (3) a group represented by the formula ##STR1## or (4) a group represented by the formula ##STR2## Also disclosed are nucleophilic derivatives thereof, as well as curable compositions and coating compositions containing the advanced or unadvanced epoxy resins or nucleophilic modified advanced or unadvanced epoxy resins. These advanced resins and unadvanced epoxy resins provide coatings with good flexibility or formability as exhibited by good flexural or formable properties determined by reverse impact, T-bend and wedge-bend tests, chip resistance, and with good corrosion resistance and throwpower.

Advanced and unadvanced compositions, nucleophilic derivatives thereof

Advanced resin compositions are prepared from a compound having an average of more than one vicinal epoxide group per molecule and an epoxide equivalent weight of from about 170 to about 200 and a compound having an average of more than one aromatic hydroxyl group per molecule wherein the resultant advanced resin has an epoxide or aromatic hydroxyl equivalent weight of from about 200 to about 50,000.

Epoxy resin composition and process therefor

Compositions are prepared by the reaction of (A) an advanced composition resulting from reacting (1) at least one of (a) at least one epoxidized triglyceride of a fatty acid, or (b) at least one epoxidized fatty acid having an average of more than one unsaturated group per molecule or (c) at least one diepoxyalkane, or (d) any combination of any two or more of (a), (b) or (c), or (e) a combination of any one or more of (a), (b) or (c) and (f) a diglycidyl ether of a dihydric phenol; with (2) a dihydric phenol; (B) optionally a monohydric phenol; (C) a phosphorous-containing compound; and (D) optionally a base. These compositions can be cured with curing agents which react with aliphatic hydroxyl groups.

Advanced epoxy compositions, curable compositions and cured products

Compositions are prepared by the reaction of (A) an advanced composition resulting from reacting (1) at least one of (a) at least one epoxidized triglyceride of a fatty acid, or (b) at least one epoxidized fatty acid having an average of more than one unsaturated group per molecule or (c) at least one diepoxyalkane, or (d) any combination of any two or more of (a), (b) or (c), or (e) a combination of any one or more of (a), (b) or (c) and (f) a diglycidyl ether of a dihydric phenol; with (2) a dihydric phenol; (B) optionally a monohydric phenol; (C) a phosphorus-containing compound; and (D) optionally a base. These compositions can be cured with curing agents which react with aliphatic hydroxyl groups.

Epoxy resins are modified by reaction with an acidified polytertiary amine-containing compound. These modified epoxy resins when cured result in products having improved properties.

Modified epoxy resin compositions

Advanced epoxy resins are prepared from a liquid diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A and bisphenol A which advanced epoxy resins have an equivalent weight in the range of 3,000 to 3,900 and a weight average molecualr weight of 13,000 to 17,000. When these advanced epoxy resins are formulated into can coating compositions they result in coatings having good wet and dry adhesion.

Advanced epoxy resin for can coating applications

This invention is concerned with water-soluble epoxy resins represented by the general formula ##STR1## wherein A and B are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and the ##STR2## radical, X is a halogen having an atomic number from 17 to 53 inclusive and a, b and c are integers the sum of which equals a number from 0 to 3. These water-soluble glycidyl ethers of glycerine are prepared by reacting glycerine with an epoxyalkyl halide in the presence of a Lewis Acid catalyst, subsequently at least partially dehydrohalogenating the resulting product, and finally recovering the water-soluble glycidyl ether product. Both the condensation reaction and the dehydrohalogenation reaction are carried out in the presence of an organic solvent. The products of this invention are polymerizable and useful in the same way as other glycidyl ethers but additionally may be used in aqueous formulations for coatings, adhesives and the like.

Water-soluble epoxy resins and process for their preparation
