A lens assembly is separated into a first lens module including at least one lens element and a second lens module including at least one other lens element during alignment of its lens elements. Coarse alignment is conducted by aligning an optical axis of at least one lens element within the first lens module with an optical axis of at least one lens element within the second lens module. For conducting fine alignment, an image sensor views a test chart while the first and second lens modules are positioned between the test chart and the image sensor. Image quality indices are obtained from the image sensor of the test chart at different relative alignments between the first and second lens modules, before the first lens module is fixed to the second lens module at a relative alignment therebetween where the image quality indices are optimized.

System and method for aligning multiple lens elements

Before fixing first and second lens modules to an image sensor to form an assembled camera module, the first lens module is held while electrical signals are provided to a first lens element comprised in the first lens module to drive the first lens element to move. An incident light is received along a first optical path and a reflective surface of the first lens element projects the incident light along a second optical path perpendicular to the first optical path such that the incident light is projected through the second lens module along the second optical path onto the image sensor. The first lens module and first lens element are moved relative to the image sensor until the reflective surface forms an inclination angle of 45 degrees with respect to the incident light, so that the incident light is projected normally onto an image plane of the image sensor.

Aligning lens elements in a lens module relative to an image sensor

A method for aligning an image sensor relative to a lens module, the method comprising the steps of: receiving a test image along a first optical path with the lens module and projecting the test image along a second optical path transverse to the first optical path with the lens module; manipulating an orientation of the lens module with respect to the image sensor to project the test image along the second optical path onto the image sensor; using the test image received by the image sensor along the second optical path to determine a corrected orientation of the lens module with respect to the image sensor, so as to align the lens module with respect to the image sensor; and thereafter fixing the aligned lens module to the image sensor.

Aligning an image sensor relative to a lens module

An apparatus for aligning a lens module with an image sensor to form a camera module includes a chart holder, a positioning unit and a reflective elements holder assembly. In use, the chart holder holds a test chart having a region of interest (ROI), the positioning unit holds the lens module and the image sensor, and the reflective elements holder assembly holds multiple reflective elements between the chart holder and the positioning unit. A first optical path from the ROI is directed to a first position on the image sensor. Second optical paths from the ROI are reflected by the reflective elements to respective second positions on the image sensor, the second positions being spaced from the first position. The images captured by the image sensor (arising from the aforementioned optical paths) are analysed and the positioning unit aligns the lens module with the image sensor based on such analysis.

Apparatus using reflective elements for aligning a lens module with an image sensor

For aligning an image sensor relative to a lens module prior to fixing the image sensor to the lens module, an exposure of the image sensor is turned on and the image sensor is moved to different distances relative to the lens module. At certain predetermined distances between the image sensor and the lens module, a calibration pattern is illuminated and two or more pictures of the calibration pattern which is focused through the lens module are captured with the image sensor to produce at least two pictures of the calibration pattern captured at different distances, the at least two pictures being superimposed onto a calibration image. The exposure of the image sensor is then turned off and the pictures of the calibration pattern are analyzed for determining an alignment between the lens module and the image sensor.

Active lens alignment system

An apparatus for assembling a lens module and an image sensor to form a camera module. The apparatus comprises i) a positioning system for adjusting a relative arrangement between the lens module and the image sensor; and ii) an inspection system operative to view fiducials of the lens modules and the image sensor. In particular, the positioning system is configured to align the lens module and the image sensor based on a relative alignment of the respective fiducials of the lens module and the image sensor as viewed by the inspection system. A method of assembling a lens module and an image sensor to form a camera module is also disclosed.
