Synthetic materials that are useful as heterogeneous catalysts or electrocatalysts. The materials can be used to catalyze oxidation and/or reduction reactions and/or oxygen/hydrogen evolution/oxydation reactions.

Materials with atomically dispersed chemical moieties

Methods for optimizing, designing, making, and assembling various component parts and layers to produce optimized MEAs. Optimization is generally achieved by producing multi-layered MEAs wherein characteristics such as catalyst composition and morphology, ionomer concentration, and hydrophobicity/hydophilicity are specifically tuned in each layer. The MEAs are optimized for use with a variety of catalysts including catalysts with specifically designed and controlled morphology, chemical speciation on the bulk, chemical speciation on the surface, and/or specific hydrophobic or hydrophilic or other characteristics. The catalyst can incorporate non-platinum group metal (non-PGM) and/or platinum group metal (PGM) materials.

Smart-MEAs for high power fuel cells

Electrooxidative materials and various method for preparing electrooxidative materials formed from an alloy of oxophilic and electrooxidative metals. The alloy may be formed using methods such as spray pyrolysis or mechanosynthesis and may or may not include a supporting material which may or may not be sacrificial as well as the materials.

Active catalysts synthesized by hydrothermal methods

A variety of inorganic-organic hybrid materials and various methods for preparing and using the same are described. The hybrid materials are graphene or graphitic materials populated with organic molecules and may have a variety of surface defects, pits or three-dimensional architecture, thereby increasing the surface area of the material. The hybrid materials may take the form of three dimensional graphene nanosheets (3D GNS). If the organic molecules are enantiospecific molecules, the hybrid materials can be used for chiral separation of racemic mixtures.

Novel non-planar non-contiguous graphene structures and novel methods for forming the same. According to some embodiments the novel methods result in three-dimensional graphene structures. According to a further embodiment these three-dimensional graphene structures have a specific, controlled morphology. According to a still further method the novel method results in decoratable graphene sheets or three-dimensional graphene structures.

Supercapacitive bioelectrical systems (SC-BESs) wherein the anode and cathode act as electrodes for a self-powered internal supercapacitor. The BES may further be enhanced by the use of optimized catalysts and enzymes to increase cell voltage and the use of a third capacitive electrode (AdE) short-circuited to the BES cathode and coupled to the BES anode to improve the power output of the self-powered internal supercapacitor.

Biological and stand-alone super-capacitors for water treatment

A supported bi-metallic non-platinum catalyst that is capable of oxidizing hydrazine to produce, as by-products of energy production, nitrogen, water, and zero or near-zero levels of ammonia is described.
