A satellite communication system includes a satellite, satellite base station (eNodeB or gNodeB) and a user equipment (UE). The satellite provides a number of satellite beams, and each satellite beam includes multiple cells. The base station communicates with the UE via a satellite using a narrowband internet of things (NB-IoT) waveform and an enhanced protocol. In particular, the base station and UE perform carrier aggregation by adding and/or deleting carriers in a cell, and the base station and UE perform a higher-order modulation and coding scheme (MCS) processing to support high data rates for user data transport.

Achieving higher data rate on NB-IoT over satellite

A communication system consists of a satellite constellation including a number of NGSO satellites, one or more gateways and a control center. The satellites facilitate communication for multiple user terminals. Each gateway communicates with the satellites and user terminals and provides connectivity to the terrestrial networks, and the control center controls operation of the satellites, the gateways and the user terminals. The satellites, the user terminals, the gateways and the control center include hardware that may be software-defined network (SDN) enabled to ensure efficient admission control, precision handover management and quality-of-service (QoS) enforcement algorithms.

Information rate and quality-of-service configurations for end-to-end data flow in an NGSO satellite network

A communication system includes a satellite constellation, one or more gateways and a network controller. The satellite constellation includes multiple satellites to facilitate communication between a number of user terminals (UTs). Each gateway communicates with one or more of the satellites. The network controller controls operation of the satellites, the gateways and the UTs. The satellites, the UTs, the gateways and the network controller include hardware that may also be software-defined network (SDN) enabled to ensure a persistent end-to-end data packet forwarding including proactive updates and reactive updates to forwarding tables. The proactive updates handle deterministic and time-synchronized link connectivity changes and the reactive updates handle ad hoc link connectivity changes.

Data packet forwarding in an NGSO satellite network

An ISDN Satellite Switch (ISS) is disposed between ISDN user equipment (e.g., an ISDN PBX) and a satellite network, to extract and process the ISDN signaling information originated from the ISDN user equipment, allocate an appropriate satellite capacity for the user service request, generate signaling response messages to the originating user, generate messages to be transmitted over a satellite signaling channel to the corresponding ISS connected to the destination user, and provide an appropriate Protocol Conversion Function (PCF), when necessary for a certain class of data protocols. A destination ISS, after receipt of these messages, generates ISDN incoming call signaling messages to be sent to the called user.
