A high sensitivity magnetic anomaly detector for geomagnetic exploration comprises a shorted coaxial transmission line having as central conductor an amorphous magnetic wire. A static magnetic field is applied along the transmission line. A transverse electromagnetic wave also propagates along the transmission line and excites a ferromagnetic resonance of the magnetic ions located within the depth of penetration of the circumferential microwave magnetic field into the magnetic wire. The microwave giant magnetoimpedance effect occurring in the magnetic wire changes the magnetic wire impedance as follows: the real part of the impedance peaks and the imaginary part passes through zero at a given frequency (the ferromagnetic resonance frequency). This frequency depends on the saturation magnetization of the magnetic wire and the strength of the static magnetic field. A slight variation of the Earth's magnetic field (a magnetic anomaly) changes this frequency, thus providing information about large metallic masses hidden under the Earth's surface or underwater.

Magnetic anomaly detector and method using the microwave giant magnetoimpedence effect

A high sensitivity magnetic field sensor is described. The sensing element is a stress-sensitive, negative-magnetostriction, melt-extracted amorphous wire, in which a strong magneto-impendance effect develops when the wire is connected to conventional electronic circuitry, which can be an impedance-meter. An a.c. current is provided to the wire and its relative change in impedance is measured. Simultaneously, the wire is submitted to a longitudinal d.c. magnetic field, H. A saturating d.c. field pulse is also applied to this wire at the beginning of the operating cycle. Tensile stress is further generated in the wire by pulling one end of the wire with a given force. This stress can be fine-tuned for sensitivity and bias with the help of a suitable mechanism. All these elements are packaged in a rugged non-magnetic enclosure, which permits easy and reliable connection of the sensor to said conventional electronic circuitry.

The instant invention is concerned with the casting of metal fibers, preferably ferrous fibers, by the melt extraction technique. The metal to be cast as a fiber is in the form of a rod which is brought into contact with a spinning wheel having a tapered perimeter. The rod is heated by electromagnetic induction by a specially designed, slightly curved spiral coil. The coil is shaped to focus the heat at, or close to, the tip of the rod so to induce a meniscus. The rod is fed the through an opening in a guide that acts as a heat sink to carry away excess heat and prevent the rod from melting except at its tip. The spinning wheel is placed in contact with the melted portion of the rod and forms the fibers as it is rotated.

Amorphous ferromagnetic alloys having a niobium content in the range of 2.5 to 15 atomic percent have been conceived. These alloys are obtained directly in the amorphous state or as a mixture of amorphous and crystalline places. These alloys have superior properties relative to prior known amorphous and some amorphous alloys. The amorphous ferromagnetic alloys of this invention are readily produced by rapid solidification techniques with no need for subsequent treatment.

Nickel rich amorphous ferromagnetic alloys having a nickel content in the range of 35 to 55 atomic percent have been conceived. These alloys are in the amorphous state and exhibit high permeability relative to prior known amorphous ferromagnetic alloys. These nickel rich alloys can be produced by rapid solidification techniques without the need of subsequent heat treating.

The ferromagnetic fiber is produced by using a spinning disk type of device that engages a bath of molten alloy having the desired compositions for the fiber. The use of ferromagnetic fibers has resulted in the ability to produce EAS markers of such a small length that they can be dispensed using a commercial labeler.
