The present invention is a passive receive module for use with an OTDR for determining polarity of a cable under test. Only one position of the module connector of the receive module includes a filling and all other positions are occupied with a reflective component with a reflective characteristic distinct from that of the filling. Only one position at the OTDR end of the cable will receive a distinct reflection from all of the other positions. Polarity may be determined from these positions.

Polarity receive module

The test device of the present invention is configured to test the continuity and polarity of a plurality of fibers housed by a cable that extends between the multi-fiber connectors on either end of the cable. In its most basic form, the test device of the present invention includes first and second light sources; an optical splitter positioned between the second light source and the connector at the first end of the cable housing the plurality of fibers under test; and a receiver and configured for optical communication with the second end of the cable. The first light source creates a first light pattern, which is distinct from a second light pattern created by the second light source.

Multi-fiber connector visual polarity and continuity tester

A digital fiber optic connector imaging system that can automatically capture two or more images of the endface of a multifiber connector, wherein the captured images as a group have sufficient resolution and a sufficient FOV to be used to perform a manual or automatic pass-fail analysis of the endface of every fiber terminated by the connector under inspection. In one or more embodiments, the imaging system comprises an illumination source that can operate at two or more wavelengths, one wavelength at a time, and a FOV-shifting component that includes one or more, fixed dichroic mirrors and one additional dichroic or broadband mirror. In other embodiments, the imaging system comprises a single-wavelength illumination source, an image beam splitter, and two or more image sensors located on two image planes.

Imaging system for multi-fiber connector inspection

The present invention is an Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) with an integrated Launch Cable that has a retractable lead, designed to work as a standalone instrument, or under the control of an external device such as a smartphone, tablet, PC, or server. The first characterized feature of this invention is the integration of the OTDR and Launch Cable in one housing where the spool of the aforementioned Launch Cable can rotate and is spring-loaded relative to the aforementioned housing, and is equipped with a flying lead that can be extracted from or retracted back into the aforementioned housing under spring tension, or where the spool of the aforementioned Launch Cable is affixed to the aforementioned housing and equipped with a flying lead that can be manually unwrapped from and wrapped back into the aforementioned housing; the OTDR and Launch Cable are attached, for example using standard fiber optic connectors, so that the Launch Cable can be easily replaced in the field by a user with no special tools. The second characterized feature of this invention is to integrate a wireless transmitting and receiving device into the OTDR module, which can receive setup and other commands from, and send instrument status and test results to an external device. The advantages of such a device are: the ability to conveniently hold, place, or hang the instrument as a single unit while in use; the ability to place the instrument into its carry case without disconnecting the launch cable, thus reducing the number of connection, cleaning, and inspection steps that must be performed each time the instrument is removed from its carry case for use and reducing wear on the OTDR test port and launch cable (OTDR end) connectors; the ability to remove and replace Launch Cable module in the field without special tools should it become damaged or if the user wants a different connector type; the ability to use an external device to analyse and format test results and provide additional networking functions; the ability to move processing functions to the external device, which in turn allows the use of lower power, lower cost processors in the OTDR to reduce cost and increase battery life. The present invention also includes a special embodiment in which the OTDR module is physically located within the Launch Cable module so that the overall device becomes more compact, and more resistant to drops and other external impacts.

Optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) with integrated, retractable launch cable

An integrating sphere-equipped optical measurement device and optical connector polarity and type identification and loss measurement are provided. The optical measurement device receives one or more optical signals that respectively emanate from one or more optical fibers of a plurality of optical fibers of an optical fiber cable. The optical measurement device determines one or more respective positions where the one or more optical signals impinged on a sensor. The optical measurement device determines based on the one or more positions, one or more receiving positions of the one or more optical signals, respectively. The optical measurement device determines a polarity of the optical fiber cable based on both the one or more receiving positions and one or more or transmitting positions of the one or more optical signals, respectively.

Optical connector polarity and loss measurement using an integrating sphere-equipped optical measurement device

An integrating sphere-equipped optical measurement device and optical connector polarity and type identification and loss measurement are provided. The optical measurement device includes at least two photodetectors that are optically responsive over different ranges of wavelengths. The optical measurement device receives one or more optical signals emanate from optical fibers of an optical fiber cable. The optical measurement device determines an optical intensity or loss of the one or more optical signals based on a measurement made by a corresponding photodetector whose responsivity range includes a wavelength of the one or more optical signals. The optical measurement device determines one or more respective positions where the one or more optical signals impinged on a sensor. The optical measurement device determines a polarity of the optical fiber cable based on both the one or more positions and one or more or transmitting positions of the one or more optical signals, respectively.

The present invention is a hybrid ferrule which is able to be connected to both, angle polished and flat polished, MPO connectors; a test device including the above mentioned hybrid ferrule; and a test kit, including the above mentioned test device with hybrid ferrule. The hybrid ferrule of the present invention includes first, second, and third surfaces which are designed in a special way to ensure the high quality connection with SM or MM type connectors. A hybrid fiber connector having an integrated end, a connection end, two sides, a flat center, and an optical fiber embedded in the flat center parallel to and halfway between the two sides. The connection end includes left and right edges and first, second, and third surfaces. The first surface angles upward from said left edge of said connection end to a first point, the second surface extends flat between the first point and a second point, and a third surface angles downward between the second point and the right edge of said connection end.

Handheld interferometer based wavelength meter

A optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) which sends and receives pulses for multiple frequencies down a fiber under testing (FUT). These frequencies can include frequencies for testing a live FUT and frequencies for testing a dark FUT. The pulses of the various frequencies are sent and received through a single optical connection with the FUT. The number of connections necessary to test the fiber is thus reduced. The OTDR may also include a built in passive optical network (PON) power meter, which measures the power level of the fiber over the same single optical connection.
