Methods, apparatuses and a user equipment for performing a Hybrid Automatic Repeat Request (HARQ) transmission in a downlink from a base station to at least one user equipment are provided. An exemplary method comprises receiving a HARQ feedback to a HARQ transmission performed with respect to a transport block. The method further comprises determining whether the HARQ feedback is an ambiguous HARQ feedback with respect to a negative acknowledgement or a discontinuous transmission. The method additionally comprises setting (S) the ambiguous HARQ feedback as the negative acknowledgement or the discontinuous transmission based on the number of HARQ transmissions having been performed and the corresponding received HARQ feedbacks within a target number of HARQ transmissions counting from a first HARQ transmission. With the methods and apparatuses, the ambiguity of the HARQ feedback can be overcome and communication efficiency may be improved.

Methods, apparatuses and user equipment for hybrid automatic repeat request transmission

A method and network entity for enabling higher order modulation (HOM) mode support for HOM capable wireless devices. The method includes determining a legacy mode power offset value for HOM mode capable wireless devices in legacy modulation mode and calculating a power headroom value for sending downlink data to the HOM mode capable wireless devices. When the power headroom value exceeds a threshold value, the HOM mode support for the HOM mode capable wireless devices is enabled using the identified legacy mode power offset value. When the power headroom value does not exceed the threshold value, and a HOM mode power offset value is available, the HOM mode power offset value being less than the legacy modulation mode power offset value, the HOM mode support for the HOM mode capable wireless devices is enabled using the HOM mode power offset value.

Dynamic downlink power allocation for supporting higher order modulation

In one embodiment, a method of operating a radio access node is provided. The method comprises determining whether support from a secondary cell is required for a wireless device to communicate with the radio access node, and, in response to determining that support from the secondary cell is required, calculating a modified channel condition outer-loop value for the secondary cell; and using the modified channel condition outer-loop value in an initial activation decision step for the secondary cell. The initial activation decision step may comprise activating the secondary cell in response to determining that the sum of a device reported channel condition value and the modified channel condition outer-loop value is above an activation threshold. Corresponding devices, computer programs and radio access nodes adapted to carry out the methods provided are also disclosed.

Secondary cell activation/deactivation in carrier aggregation

A method and system for selectively activating and deactivating secondary cells in a wireless communication system are disclosed. According to one aspect, the invention provides a finite state machine having a plurality of states facilitating secondary cell activation and deactivation decisions. The states of the finite state machine include a deactivated state and an activated state. In the deactivated state, a secondary cell is deactivated and a media access control element, MAC CE, for deactivation is sent to the UE. The base station in the deactivated state is not allocating resources for maintaining transmission on the secondary cell. In the activated state, the secondary cell is active and a MAC CE for activation is sent to the UE. In the activated state, the base station is ready to transmit on the secondary cell.

State-driven secondary cell activation and deactivation

Systems and methods for subframe-based link adaptation for a radio signal in a cellular communications network are disclosed. In one embodiment, a base station obtains a hybrid automatic repeat request acknowledgement for data transmitted between the base station and a mobile terminal in a radio signal of the base station. The base station then updates a parameter (e.g., SINR offset) used to control a Modulation and Coding Scheme (MCS) for transmission of data between the base station and the mobile terminal in the radio signal for one or more subframes in a frame structure of the radio signal based on the hybrid automatic repeat request acknowledgement. The one or more subframes are a subset of all of the subframes in the frame structure of the radio signal.

Multiple outer loop link adaptation

The transmission of stand-alone, aperiodic CSI reports from a UE in carrier aggregation in an LTE network is optimized. The coding rate is indirectly controlled by varying the number of RBs allocated for the CSI report transmission. Two sets of serving cells are established, and the payload of each set is approximated. For each allowable number of RBs and each payload size, a threshold SINR is determined and stored. An initial number of RBs is selected, based on the number of cells. The actual SINR is measured, and compared to the threshold SINR for the number of RBs and payload size. The number of RBs to be allocated is varied based on the comparison, by varying an index into an array of allowable numbers of RBs. Link adaptation is performed based on observed decoding errors, in an outer loop control algorithm that prevents wind up. An optimization for the particular case of one PCell and one SCell is also presented.

Efficient transmission of stand-alone aperiodic CSI reporting for LTE carrier aggregation

A method and base station for adjusting outer-loop adjustment values used for link adaptation in a wireless communication network is provided. A modulation of a user equipment is determined and a success or failure of a Transport Block (TB) based on a TB feedback message is determined. Based on the TB feedback, one of an acknowledgement counter and a non-acknowledgement counter is incremented corresponding to the determined modulation. An upward step size for the determined modulation is updated based on the respective acknowledgement counter and the non-acknowledgement counter to affect link adaption.

Outer-loop adjustment for wireless communication link adaptation

A method and base station for outerloop adjustment for link adaptation of a physical downlink control channel, PDCCH, in a communication network to determine a control channel element, CCE, aggregation level of a downlink assignment downlink control information, DCI, and a CCE aggregation level of an uplink grant DCI is provided. A downlink data packet feedback corresponding to the downlink assignment is received. A status of the downlink data packet feedback is determined. An uplink data packet corresponding to the uplink grant is received and a status thereof is determined. An outerloop downlink adjustment and outerloop uplink adjustment are updated based on at least one of the status of the downlink data packet feedback corresponding to the downlink assignment and status of the uplink data packet corresponding to the uplink grant. An outerloop uplink adjustment is determined as a sum of the outerloop downlink adjustment and an offset adjustment.

Outer-loop control in wireless communication link adaptation

Methods of performing link adaptation in a wireless communication system for simultaneous transmission of codewords include selecting initial modulation and coding scheme (MCS) levels for the codewords, estimating a size ratio of the codewords, determining a number of scheduling blocks (SB) for the codewords with the initial MCS levels, and determining revised MCS levels for the codewords in response to the determined number of SBs. Transport block sizes are computed for the codewords, and it is determined if there is a need to increase the number of scheduling blocks in at least one of the codewords. If there is a need to increase the number of scheduling blocks in a codeword, scheduling blocks are added to the codeword, and the transport block size for the codeword is recomputed. The codewords are then simultaneously transmitted over different multiple input-multiple output (MIMO) communication channels using the same time and frequency resources.

Methods and apparatus for link adaptation for single user and multi-user MIMO

Joint uplink processing by plural base stations includes sending, by a serving base station, a request for uplink resources of a second base station for receiving uplink data of a mobile station. The serving base station receives first uplink data from the mobile station, and the serving base station further receives (from the second base station) second uplink data of the mobile station received by the second base station using the uplink resources specified by the request.

Joint uplink data processing by plural base stations

A radio resource management method is provided. Data for transmission is stored. The stored data is associated with user equipment (UE). A channel quality is estimated. A first modulation and coding scheme (MCS) is determined based at least in part on the estimated channel quality. A first number of scheduling blocks (SBs) required to transmit the stored data is determined based at least in part on the first MCS. The first number of SBs are a minimum of an initial number of SBs and available amount of SBs. A link quality is calculated based at least in part on a channel condition associated with the first number of SBs. A second MCS is determined based at least in part on the calculated link quality and a link quality requirement.
