A formation tester tool assembly includes a seal member mounted on rigid stabilizer that contacts a borehole wall separately from the seal member, so that seal exposure to a stabilization load that presses the tool against the borehole wall is limited or reduced by contact engagement of the stabilizer with the borehole wall. The stabilizer is provided by a hydraulically actuated probe piston reciprocally movable relative to a tool body on which it is mounted. The seal member is in some embodiments movable relative to the probe piston, for example being configured for hydraulic actuation to sealingly engage the borehole wall while the tool body is stabilized by action of the probe piston.

The present disclosure relates to elastomer-thermally conductive carbon fiber compositions for use in seals for roller-cone drill bits. The present disclosure further relates to seals formed from such compositions and to roller-cone drill bits containing such seals.

An example downhole tool may include a first component and a second component. A first seal may be positioned between the first component and the second component, and a first energizer may be positioned between the first seal and the first component. The first seal may comprise a polyaryletherketone (PAEK) material. The first energizer may be a compressible material. The PAEK material may be at least one of polyetherketone (PEK), polyether ether ketone (PEEK), polyetherketoneketone (PEKK), polyehtheretherketoneketone (PEEKK), and polyetherketoneether-ketoneketone (PEKEKK).

Wellbore tools may use carbon nanoforests to reduce the access of abrasive particles to compressible sealing elements of joints of the wellbore tool. In some instances, a wellbore tool may include a joint comprising two elements having opposing mating surfaces that define a gap; a compressible sealing element arranged between the opposing mating surfaces and configured to seal a portion of the gap, thereby defining a sealed segment and an unsealed segment of the gap; and at least one carbon nanoforest disposed within at least a portion of the unsealed segment and coupled to at least one of the opposing mating surfaces.

An extended life seal is incorporated into a drill bit used for drilling a wellbore. The drill bit can include a seal surface, a seal which engages the seal surface, and a groove which compresses the seal greater on opposite axial sides than at a central portion of the seal. The drill bit may include the seal having a cylindrical surface which engages the seal surface, and another cylindrical surface opposite the first surface, and the groove having a third cylindrical surface which engages the second surface, and wherein the groove simultaneously biases the seal toward the seal surface on opposite axial sides of the third surface. The drill bit may include the seal having right cylindrical shaped inner and outer surfaces, and a contact pressure between the seal surface and the seal being greater at each opposite side of the seal than at a central portion of the seal.

An embodiment disclosed herein provides a high-temperature lubricant comprising an oil-soluble lubricating base fluid or a water-soluble lubricating base fluid; and elongated carbon nanoparticles that align in flow. In some embodiments, the lubricating composition may be selected from the group consisting of graphene nanoribbons; carbon nanotubes; carbon nanohorns; and any combination thereof.

A roller cone drill bit may include optimally designed bearing structures and cutting structures. The roller cone drill bit may include three cone assemblies rotatably mounted on respective spindles via respective bearing structures. Each cone assembly may have a respective cutting structure with a minimal moment center located along each respective axis of rotation. Each respective bearing structure has a center point located proximate each respective minimal moment center.

The present disclosure relates to greases containing metal sulfonate thickeners. In one example the thickener may be a calcium sulfonate thickener. In other examples grease may contain a combination of a metal sulfonate thickener and another thickener, such as a metal complex soap grease, detergent, or non-soap thickener. The grease may be formulated to meet specific performance criteria relevant to lubrication of a roller cone drill bit in downhole conditions. The disclosure also relates to a roller cone drill bit containing a grease of the disclosure.

A method of reducing contact pressure between bearing surfaces of a well tool can include constructing a structure which supports one bearing surface in contact with the other bearing surface, and reducing contact pressure between the bearing surfaces by relieving strain energy in the structure. A well tool can include one bearing surface which contacts another bearing surface. There is a transition between contact and lack of contact between the bearing surfaces. A structure supporting one of the bearing surfaces can have a reduced stiffness, whereby a contact pressure between the bearing surfaces is reduced at the transition. The bearing surfaces can be formed on a thrust bearing, plain bearing, or other type of bearing between components of the well tool.

Roller cone drill bits may be formed with cutting elements and cutting structures having cutting element profile angles selected to minimize cone wobble and improve life of associated bearings and seals. Normal force axes of the cutting elements may intersect with each other as a force center. Crest points of the cutting elements may be disposed on one or more circles extending from the associated force center.

Elastomeric seals for use in drill bits on which an inorganic surface modification material has been deposited onto the surface of the elastomeric seals. Wear resistance of the seal at the dynamic surface is improved by providing support for the soft seal surface, by means of the inorganic atoms, against a harder surface.
