A motor control system is provided that includes a communication gateway that facilitates connection of components, such as a motor starter, an operator interface, and a terminal block, through a digital communication link. The communication gateway includes control logic designed to discover interface and operational components connected to the digital communication link upon start-up of the motor control system. The control logic may then set up an operational profile for the motor control system based on the discovered components. For example, the control logic may retrieve and load an operational profile that corresponds to the set of discovered components from a storage of the communication gateway. The operational profile can then be used during operation of the motor control system to govern the functionality of the motor control system.

Plug and play motor control system

An apparatus includes a switch module that selectively turns on a switch to connect an input power conductor connected to a voltage source to a motor in a sequence. The switch for each phase is turned on for a portion of a cycle of a fundamental frequency of the voltage source. A source phase module determines a phase of the AC voltage source, a back-EMF phase module determines a phase of a back-EMF of the motor, and a torque module determines when a phase difference between the phase of the AC voltage source and the phase of the back-EMF is within a phase range indicative of a positive motor torque. A pulse module enables the switches in response to the phase difference having a phase within the phase range and disables the switches in response to the phase difference having a phase not in the phase range.

Quasi vector motor controller

An apparatus for a quasi variable frequency motor controller is includes a DFC module that applies a first frequency to a motor as part of a discrete frequency control ('DFC') method for motor starting. The first frequency includes a discrete frequency in a plurality of discrete frequencies of the DFC method and each discrete frequency includes a frequency lower than a fundamental frequency of an alternating current ('AC') voltage source providing power to the motor. The apparatus includes a torque module that determines when motor torque generated by the motor reaches a negative torque threshold and a next frequency module that applies a second frequency to the motor in response to the torque module determining that the motor torque has reached the negative torque threshold. The second frequency is a next frequency in the DFC method.

Quasi variable frequency motor controller

A device is provided for riding through brownouts, or transitory losses of control power applied to electromagnetic devices such as contactors and relays. An energy storage circuit stores charge that can be discharged into a contactor operating coil during partial or full losses of control power and for short durations. Momentary reductions in control power can thus be experienced without opening or otherwise changing the logical state of the contactor. Emergency stop override circuitry may be provided for preventing the ride-through performance, thus enabling the device to provide for both ride-through of short losses of control power, while permitting emergency stopping of loads due to the override.

Brownout ride-through system and method

A current sensing module is provided for contactors and similar switch gear. The current sensing module is packaged so as to be capable of mounting on a line or a load side of a contactor. The current sensing module may be eliminated where current signals are not needed, but can be added to the package where monitoring and control functions may benefit from sensed current signals on either or both sides of a contactor. The current sensing module may be configured as a single or multiple-phase device, and may output either analog or digital signals to local devices or to networked devices.
