All variations of the parameters above lead various types of the cutting elements and methods of including self- assembling and/or 'One Size Cutting Element for Assembling Several Size of Reamers' in order to assembling either reusable or disposable reamer.

An improved electro-optical system has a planar waveguide coupled to a photodetector through a transparent substrate. The planar waveguide is within a planar optical structure that can be part of optical communication network. The photodetector can be electrically coupled to electrical circuitry along the transparent substrate for connection to a electrical apparatus. Corresponding methods for forming the electro-optical structure are described. A thin film interleaver device is disclosed. The thin film interleaver includes thin film optics. The thin film(s) are formed such that they reflect one group of wavelengths while allowing a second group of wavelengths to pass through the thin film(s). The thin film(s) exhibit a flat top frequency response across the channel bandwidths of the multiplexed signal for which the thin film filter is designed such that the thin film interleaver is less sensitive to wavelength drift and temperature variations.

A polarization maintaining coupler is provided that allows a user to change the coupling ratio of two or more output fibers. The coupler can include an assembly containing a PM fiber in a ferrule. The ferrule is attached to a housing, which includes a lens for collimating light from the PM fiber onto an optical component that splits the incoming polarized light into two orthogonally polarized components. Each of these orthogonal components is then output into a separate PM or single mode fiber. By rotating the input PM fiber with respect to the optical component, the coupling ratio of the output fibers can be changed. This change in the coupling ratio can be accomplished either by rotating the input PM fiber, or by rotating the optical component together with the output fibers.

A system and method for reducing polarization dependent loss in optical circuits is disclosed. The system includes a first optical device having an output, and a polarization controller optically coupled to the first optical device for adjusting a polarization state of the output of the first optical device. The system further includes a second optical device optically coupled to the polarization controller. Adjusting the polarization state of the output of the first optical device alters a total polarization-dependent loss for the cascaded device system. A series of fiber optic loops can be used to adjust the output of the first optical device. A PDL measuring device can be inserted after the second optical device to provide feedback to the polarization controller, so that the controller may be tuned to adjust the polarization to a desired state.

The present invention is a hybrid cell that utilizes a PBS pair in conjunction with a wedge tuner and a crystal to achieve a more stable interleaver. A first PBS splits an incoming optical signal into two orthogonally polarized beams which follow different optical paths through the cell. The length of the wedge tuner and crystal are selected such that the periodicity of the cell is approximately inversely proportional to the free spectral range at a target frequency. The length of the wedge tuner and crystal are also selected such that there is no change in an optical path difference between the two optical paths with respect to a change in temperature over an operating temperature range.
