The present disclosure provides additive materials to be added to sulfide-containing solid electrolyte materials for use in solid state batteries, solid state batteries using such additive materials in their solid electrolyte materials, and methods of making such solid state batteries. The additive materials provided herein allow the solid state batteries using such additive materials to operate under relatively lower pressures compared to solid state batteries without such additive materials.

Solid state batteries and methods of making thereof

Solid electrolyte compositions and solid-state batteries are disclosed, which comprise a solid electrolyte layer including a sulfide-containing solid-state electrolyte material and a compound of Chemical Formula 1. The sulfide-containing solid-state electrolyte material includes but is not limited to LiPSCl ('LPSC'), an LPS-based glass or glass ceramic of formula xLiS·yPS, wherein x+y=1, or an argyrodite-based sulfide-based solid electrolyte or formula LiPSX, wherein X═Cl, Br, or I) or LiPSCl, where y is <1. In some aspects, the compound of Chemical Formula 1 is sodium 3-mercapto-1-propanesulfonate (3M1P).

Methods for improving critical current density in a sulfide-based all-solid-state lithium-ion battery

Compositions, manufacturing processes, articles of manufacture, and structures/batteries for self-forming batteries and self-healing solid electrolytes are disclosed. Example embodiments include a self-forming battery. The battery may include a first electrode material and a second electrode material. Assembly of the two electrode materials may result in a chemical reaction that forms an electrolyte layer between the two electrode materials.

Self-forming solid state batteries and self-healing solid electrolytes

A rechargeable battery device, specifically a scalable 3D lithium metal anode, and a method of manufacturing the same is disclosed. The scalable 3D electrode can serve as a lithium (Li) metal host that enables stable lithium metal cycling. Furthermore, the electrode can be fabricated by coating a slurry of well mixed LiNO, carbon black, and PVDF on a Cu foil. For example, a 3D electrode can include a binder and a plurality of additives, wherein the plurality of additives comprise at least one conductive additive and at least one solid electrolyte interface (SEI) formation additive. The conductive additive can include electronic conductors, where the conductors are selected from a group consisting of carbon black, carbon nanotubes, carbon fibers, vapor grown carbon fiber (VGCF), graphite, and graphene. The SEI formation additives are selected from a group consisting of LiNO, RbNO, KNO, CsNO, LiFSI, LiAsF, LiF, LiO, LiCO, LiPO, SiO, and LiN.

Scalable 3D lithium metal anode

Solid electrolyte compositions and solid-state batteries are disclosed, which comprise a solid electrolyte layer including a sulfide-containing solid-state electrolyte material and a compound of Chemical Formula 1. The sulfide-containing solid-state electrolyte material includes but is not limited to LiPSCl ('LPSC'), an LPS-based glass or glass ceramic of formula xLiS·yPS, wherein x+y=1, or an argyrodite-based sulfide-based solid electrolyte or formula LiPSX, wherein X=Cl, Br, or I) or LiPSCl, where y is <1. In some aspects, the compound of Chemical Formula 1 is sodium 3-mercapto-1-propanesulfonate (3M1P).

A solid-state battery and process of forming the same is provided. The solid-state battery includes a first metal electrode. The solid-state battery includes a first mixed conductor disposed on the first metal electrode. The first mixed conductor includes a mixture of ionic and electronic conductors. The solid-state battery includes a pure ionic conductor disposed on the first mixed conductor. The solid-state battery includes a second metal electrode disposed on top of the pure ionic conductor.

Layered structure for solid-state batteries and process of forming the same

Disclosed is a sulfide-containing solid electrolyte material with an organic coating, as well as densified pellets containing this solid electrolyte material, a solid electrolyte thereof, and a solid state battery containing the solid electrolyte. According to aspects of the disclosure, the coating comprising a compound of Chemical Formula (1) or Chemical Formula (2) is formed on the surface of a sulfide-containing solid electrolyte material, e.g., the organic coating may comprise a compound having a thiol with a long hydrophobic tail, such as 1-undecanethiol. The coating provides densification of sulfide-containing solid electrolyte materials, and facilitates the ionic and lithium atomic diffusion coefficient at sulfide grain boundaries during pressing, thus achieving the densification of sulfide solid state electrolyte.

Method for densification of sulfide solid electrolytes

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. In some examples, a user equipment (UE) may communicate with a base station using multiple receivers and receive an indication from the base station to activate a second bandwidth part of a set of bandwidth parts configured for the UE. In response to the indication, the UE may switch from operating in a first bandwidth part to operating in the second bandwidth part and adjust a quantity of active receivers at the UE based on switching from operating in the first bandwidth part to operating in the second bandwidth part. Additionally or alternatively, the UE may adjust the quantity of active receivers at the UE based on monitoring for downlink grants from the base station.

Receiver adjustment for wireless communication

The present invention provides a battery electrode comprising an active battery material enclosed in the pores of a conductive nanoporous scaffold. The pores in the scaffold constrain the dimensions for the active battery material and inhibit sintering, which results in better cycling stability, longer battery lifetime, and greater power through less agglomeration. Additionally, the scaffold forms electrically conducting pathways to the active battery nanoparticles that are dispersed. In some variations, a battery electrode of the invention includes an electrically conductive scaffold material with pores having at least one length dimension selected from about 0.5 nm to about 100 nm, and an oxide material contained within the pores, wherein the oxide material is electrochemically active.

Porous conductive scaffolds containing battery materials

This invention, in some variations, provides a separator for a lithium-sulfur battery, comprising a porous substrate that is permeable to lithium ions; and a lithium-ion-conducting metal oxide layer on the substrate, wherein the metal oxide layer includes deposits of sulfur that are intentionally introduced prior to battery operation. The deposits of sulfur may be derived from treatment of the metal oxide layer with one or more sulfur-containing precursors (e.g., lithium polysulfides) prior to operation of the lithium-sulfur battery. Other variations provide a method of charging a lithium-sulfur battery that includes the disclosed separator, the charging being accomplished by continuously applying a substantially constant voltage to the lithium-sulfur battery until the battery charging current is at or below a selected current.

An apparatus includes a first metal layer coupled to a bit cell. The apparatus also includes a third metal layer including a write word line that is coupled to the bit cell. A thermomagnetic sensor includes a thermomagnetic probe that includes a ferromagnetic material having a temperature-dependent magnetic permeability characterized by a maximum magnetic permeability value at a temperature below a Curie temperature of the ferromagnetic material. The thermomagnetic sensor further includes an alternating magnetic field source to produce an alternating magnetic field in a vicinity of the thermomagnetic probe to facilitate a measurement of the temperature-dependent magnetic permeability as function of temperature remotely using a thermomagnetic effect. A predetermined relationship between the temperature-dependent magnetic permeability and temperature in a range between the maximum magnetic permeability value and the Curie temperature provides a measurement of a temperature local to the thermomagnetic probe. A battery-temperature measurement system includes the thermomagnetic probe in a battery, a magnetic field coil to apply the alternating magnetic field, and a magnetic permeability measurement apparatus to measure the temperature-dependent magnetic permeability.

Thermomagnetic temperature sensing

Variations of the invention provide an improved aluminum battery consisting of an aluminum anode, a non-aqueous electrolyte, and a cathode comprising a metal oxide, a metal fluoride, a metal sulfide, or sulfur. The cathode can be fully reduced upon battery discharge via a multiple-electron reduction reaction. In some embodiments, the cathode materials are contained within the pore volume of a porous conductive carbon scaffold. Batteries provided by the invention have high active material specific energy densities and good cycling stabilities at a variety of operating temperatures.

Methods of making cathodes for aluminum batteries

This invention provides a novel battery structure that, in some variations, utilizes a mixed lithium-ion and electron conductor as part of the separator. This layer is non-porous, conducting only lithium ions during operation, and may be structurally free-standing. Alternatively, the layer can be used as a battery electrode in a lithium-ion battery, wherein on the side not exposed to battery electrolyte, a chemical compound is used to regenerate the discharged electrode. This battery structure overcomes critical shortcomings of current lithium-sulfur, lithium-air, and lithium-ion batteries.
