Apparatus, method and computer program for wireless communication

This invention describes a method for improving isolation between the main antenna (e.g., a GSM antenna) and at least one further antenna (e.g., a BLUETOOTH/WLAN antenna, a diversity antenna, etc.) in an electronic communication device by a floating parasitic element placed between these two antennas for providing an isolation from electro-magnetically coupled currents between these two antennas in a ground plane, wherein the antennas are connected to the ground plane and the parasitic element is floating and electrically isolated from the ground plane. The advantages of the present invention include but are not limited to a more compact placement of antennas and a reduced cost and better reliability compared to an approach involving grounded parasitic elements.

Isolation between antennas using floating parasitic elements

The present invention comprises systems and methods for cellular, PCS, GPS and/or Bluetooth mobile communication (e.g., a mobile telephone). The systems and methods employ a fully integrated dual band IFA/loop CDMA antenna for cellular and PCS communication. Fully integrating the CDMA antenna within a PWB provides for mitigation of lumped elements to establish dual banding, and can provide for reduced antenna size, device size, cost and interference form a user's hand. The IFA antenna is configured to transmit and receive within the cellular frequency band via a capacitive tap, and the loop antenna is configured to transmit and receive within the PCS frequency band via an impedance matching stub and ground location. The system and methods further employ a firewall to mitigate antenna coupling, and a metal reflector to reduce the electromagnetic reflection, and improve antenna gain and efficiency.

Systems and methods that employ multiple antennas with a device for mobile communication

An antenna assembly for a portable radio device/mobile station is provided. The assembly includes a retractable whip antenna, a first radio leadfor coupling the whip antenna to a mobile telephony receiver, and a second radio leadfor coupling the whip antennato a FM or DVB receiver. Each lead is coupled to the whip antenna at least when the whip antenna is fully extended. In one embodiment, received signals are frequency discriminated by a RF choke such as an inductoralong the second radio lead. In another embodiment, the first radio lead is coupled directly to a PIFA antennainternal to the portable device, and the whip antenna is in parasitic communicationwith the PIFA antenna at least when the whip antenna is extended and receiving signals above a threshold frequency. In that alternative embodiment, the whip antenna is preferably decoupled from ground.
