Various technologies pertaining to formation or treatment of a thallium bromide crystal to improve the operable lifespan of a device that incorporates the thallium bromide crystal are described herein. In exemplary embodiments, treatments including focused ion beam implantation, selective material removal, and buffer layer application are performed on a thallium bromide crystal to inhibit motion of dislocations toward a region at which an electrical contact is desirably installed. In other exemplary embodiments, a thallium bromide crystal is doped with impurities during formation that inhibit the motion of dislocations in the crystal. In still other exemplary embodiments, a thallium bromide crystal is formed by way of processes that inhibit dislocation formation during crystal growth or eliminate dislocations in an existing thallium bromide mass.

A stabilized scintillator includes a compound corresponding to formula (2) or (3), or activated derivatives thereof:ABB'B&#x2033;X&#x2003;&#x2003;(2)ABB&#x2032;XX&#x2032;&#x2003;&#x2003;(3)wherein A and B are monovalent cations, B&#x2032; is a trivalent cation, X is a halogen, x and y are molar percentages, x+y=1; B&#x2033; is an aliovalent exchange cation that has a different valence than B&#x2032;, X&#x2032; is an aliovalent exchange anion that has a different valence than X. A method of preparing the stabilized scintillator is also disclosed.

Stabilized scintillator

The present invention relates to sorohalide compounds having formula ABX, where A is an alkali metal, B is a rare earth metal, and X is a halogen. Optionally, the sorohalide includes a dopant D. Such undoped and doped sorohalides are useful as scintillation materials or phosphors for any number of uses, including for radiation detectors, solid-state light sources, gamma-ray spectroscopy, medical imaging, and drilling applications.

An electrode array for neural stimulation is disclosed which has particular applications for use in a retinal prosthesis. The electrode array can be formed as a hermetically-sealed two-part ceramic package which includes an electronic circuit such as a demultiplexer circuit encapsulated therein. A relatively large number (up to 1000 or more) of individually-addressable electrodes are provided on a curved surface of a ceramic base portion the electrode array, while a much smaller number of electrical connections are provided on a ceramic lid of the electrode array. The base and lid can be attached using a metal-to-metal seal formed by laser brazing. Electrical connections to the electrode array can be provided by a flexible ribbon cable which can also be used to secure the electrode array in place.

The present invention includes methods and apparatus for inspecting vicinally illuminated non-patterned areas of translucent materials. An initial image of the material is received. A second image is received following a relative translation between the material being inspected and a device generating the images. Each vicinally illuminated image includes a portion having optimal illumination, that can be extracted and stored in a composite image of the non-patterned area. The composite image includes aligned portions of the extracted image portions, and provides a composite having optimal illumination over a non-patterned area of the material to be inspected. The composite image can be processed by enhancement and object detection algorithms, to determine the presence of, and characterize any inhomogeneities present in the material.
