A bi-directional transceiver, integrated module based on a silicon optical bench is provided, which comprises at least a laser diode, at least a signal detector, at least a thin film filter, at least an optical lens, an optical fiber and an SiOB. As the optical signal of specific wavelength can be reflected or inserted by thin film filter, the module has functions of a wavelength division multiplexer and a bi-direction transceiver. Furthermore, the optical lens improves the coupling efficiency between the laser diode and the optical fiber. On the other hand, a plurality of optical elements are integrated on the same SiOB. Hence, only a single optical fiber is used and optical signals of multiple wavelengths can be handled simultaneously.

Bi-directional transceiver module based on silicon optic bench

The present invention discloses an optic based wavelength division multiplexer device made by a micro lithography and etching process, utilizing the special crystal lattice structure of a silicon wafer. The device comprises a silicon substrate with grooves, an input fiber optic of incoming port with its front lens, a fiber optic of pass port with its front lens, a fiber optic of reflect port with its front lens, and a thin-film filter. The fiber optics, lenses, and the thin-film filter are inserted into grooves to complete the fiber-to-fiber alignment and coupling. The present invention provides both functions of wavelength multiplexing and wavelength demultiplexing. The present invention also has the characteristics of automatic alignment and passive alignment.

Silicon optic based wavelength division multiplexing device

A plug-in, optical add/drop (OAD) device includes a filter for adding and dropping a light beam of wavelength (&#x3bb;) from a combined light beam having individual beams of different wavelengths (&#x3bb;). Several devices can be selectively integrated to create an optical communications system that will handle 'n' different optical communications circuits. In operation, the devices are individually connected (plugged-in) to a GBIC, and they are serially connected (plugged-in) to each other. Consequently, immediately upstream from a device, the combined light beam includes wavelengths (&#x3bb;through &#x3bb;). On the other hand, the combined light beam immediately downstream includes (&#x3bb;through &#x3bb;and &#x3bb;through &#x3bb;).
